  • MVC Athletic Budgets

per one of the ESPN analysts...I have some serious doubts as to accuracy since this guy has football schools listed at the bottom and they have the benefit of getting "student fees" as well as state funding......
maybe he's trying to include ONLY basketball spending but it still doesn't make sense since it seems pretty implausible that
Bradley's budget is >> $16 mil but only $3 mil gets spent on basketball? Makes zero sense............but ...

    MVC Ave Budget $2.6M
    116 BU $3.36M
    131 Drake $2.9M
    134 UNI $2.85M
    137 Loyola $2.8.
    148 UE $2.6
    161 Missouri St $2.5M
    170 Valpo $2.4M
    178 Ill St $2.3M
    191 SIU $2.1M
    213 Ind St $1.86M

Those top numbers cannot be the total athletic budgets. Maybe they are for basketball only, but I don't see a source noted.

This article is a couple years old, but at the bottom is a list of the athletic department budgets for the 10 MVC schools at that time.

These numbers are from the US Dept. of Education, for 2015-16- the basketball budgets for all D1 schools-

      MVC Schools-
      121) Bradley University 3,128,419
      139) Loyola University Chicago 2,745,553
      132) University of Northern Iowa 2,899,699
      133) University of Evansville 2,899,667
      143) Valparaiso University 2,666,213
      153) Drake University 2,472,212
      156) Illinois State University 2,452,961
      171) Missouri State University-Springfield 2,279,917
      175) Southern Illinois University-Carbondale 2,241,413
      20 Indiana State University 1,832,975

Note that Bradley's basketball budget is probably artificially inflated because in 2015-16, Bradley was still paying a huge salary to Geno Ford, in addition to the salary of the new coach, Brian Wardle.

not only is Missouri State always near the bottom in athletic budget...
but also there's been several stories in the past year of other serious financial issues and budget cuts there - even cutting sports to make ends meet

plus their average home attendance which was 7,600 in 2011 - dropped to 3900 in 2016, & has averaged under 4200 over the past 3 years with lots of no-shows (almost a 50% dropoff!)
Even the disaster at Bradley didn't result in as big of a pct-dropoff (9,300 --> 5,000) as what happened at Missouri State in the same interval! (7,600 -> 3,900)
But one article I read reported this:
"While some basketball programs suffer from a lack of resources, that is not the case for Missouri State.
The 26,000 student university has the facilities, finances and fan base to succeed."

Not sure about that. We all hope they bounce back ...but they are struggling both with fan base and finances, but they have hired a coach with limited head coaching experience and a career sub-.500 record and he will need to prove himself to their fan base.

This may be a deciding factor next time around whether Murray State gets considered.

'Privatized' was the word Murray State University President Bob Davies repeated in a town hall forum on Friday addressing the budget and tuition. The…
