  • Another incredibly ignorant anti-midmajor column by a sportswriter

Mid-Majors Shouldn't Be Allowed In NCAA Tournament

I think it is a poor idea and represents what is wrong with the NCAA. I won't contact him though because that is what he wants. He wants to be known and I refuse to help him do that.

He talks of the pressures that wear on the Power 5 teams because of their rigorous schedules. Hogwash. So what if they lose a game? So what if they lose eight of their last 10? So what if they have a losing record in conference? So what if they don't win their conference tournament? Their names and strength of schedule will get them consideration for the big dance, and probably a very good seeding.

Plus, how many road games do the Power 5 play in the non-con sked?

I would argue there is much more pressure on the mid-majors. They've just gone through a conference tournament they HAD to win, even if they ran away with their conference title. Rarely do they have the luxury of playing a Quadrant I team at home -- which the Power 5 have multiple opportunities to do. And you want pressure? Let's see the Big Boys compete on the budgets -- for coaches, travel, recruiting, facilities, etc. -- that the middies make do with. Want more pressure? Worry about losing every prize recruit, star player, or even successful coach to poachers from larger programs who play on national TV every game.

Because the playing field is so far from level during the regular season is the reason it is so satisfying when the mid-majors win given the opportunity on a national stage on a neutral court. That's what makes March Madness.

A tournament with Power 5 teams only? Yawn. We've seen it all year.

Wichita lost 3 of their last four and got a 4-seed
Oklahoma lost 9 of their last 11 and 13 of their last 16 and got a 10-seed
Loyola won 19 of their last 20 games and got an 11-seed
