  • Bradley- summer foreign tour to London & Amsterdam

Here is another exclusive scoop from one of our sources at Bradleyfans.com!
Bradley is working on scheduling a summer foreign tour prior to next season (2018-19). The NCAA allows schools to do these preseason foreign tours no more than once every 4 years, and they must occur during a vacation period such as the summer, and they must conclude prior to the beginning of the fall semester.

Bradley last participated in a foreign tour in August, 2013, prior to the 2013-14 season when they visited the Bahamas and went 3-1 against club teams in Nassau between August 12-15-

These plans are apparently not yet 100% locked in, but it sounds like it will happen. We do not have any details about the destination or dates at this time. This may have played a small part in Bradley declining the CBI and CIT, as they will be allowed 10 extra practice days in the summer prior to the trip.

Here are a couple articles from the NCAA website about summer foreign trips from last year-

I believe the 2018 recruits are not allowed to play. Is that Correct? Does it apply to JC players?

        I believe they are allowed-
when ISU went to Spain a couple years ago, their new incoming freshmen (Harvey) and incoming transfers (Brewer) played
Illinois State scored 18 unanswered points to start the fourth quarter, breaking open what had been a 12-point game, in a 106-70 victory over Selecció Sporthouse Mataró (SSM) Saturday night. ISU finished its 10-day Spain trip with a 3-1 record.

Yes, I don't think that is correct. I recall several instances where incoming freshmen and juco transfers went with their teams on summer foreign tours, including Bradley on their last foreign tour (see below).

According to the NCAA (if I am reading the rule correctly), freshmen and transfers are allowed to participate in summer tours prior to their first year at the new institution as long as they meet a couple requirements. They must be officially enrolled in summer classes and be earning at least 3 credit hours, and they must be eligible to play in the upcoming season.

Here are the applicable rules from the NCAA website. See section B -

          [17.29.1.4.1-(a) and 17.29.1.4.1-(b) unchanged.]

17.29.1.4.1.1 Exception -- Basketball. In basketball, it It is permissible for an incoming student-athlete (freshman or transfer) to represent the institution on a foreign tour that occurs during the summer prior to his or her initial full-time enrollment at the certifying institution and participate in practice prior to departure for the foreign tour pursuant to Bylaw 17.28.1.5, provided the following conditions are met:

          (a) He or she has earned at least three hours of acceptable degree credit (toward any of the institution's degree programs) during the summer term at the certifying institution; and

          (b) He or she is eligible to represent the institution in intercollegiate competition during the academic year immediately following the tour.

This rule appears to have been in effect the last time Bradley took a foreign tour. In August, 2013, Bradley took a tour to the Bahamas. Here is the game story and box score from the first game on August 12, 2013, and it shows that Chris Blake, who was a new incoming juco transfer that year, and Jordan Swopshire, Stefan Zecevic, and Xzavier Taylor who were all incoming freshmen that season all played for Bradley-
NASSAU, Bahamas - Bradley dropped its opening game in the Summer of Thunder Classic as the Commonwealth Bank Giants rode 53 free throw attempts to a 77-74 victory Monday night.

          Box score-

Milton Doyle went on a foreign tour with Kansas before his fall semester of his freshman year then he left and transferred to Loyola

and the kid we have been recently discussing, Jordan Brangers - went on a foreign tour with Western Kentucky before his freshman year started then left and went to juco instead

They will like Amsterdam. I was in the Army in Germany and went to Amsterdam 3 times. However I dont think Coach Wardel will want to take his players to the same places I went....
