The MVC Luncheon is underway in St. Louis. Shortly we will know officially who the 2018 MVC Coach of the Year is.
I would be shocked if it is anyone other than Porter Moser. He did a great job this year and his team overachieved and won the MVC easily.
I used to believe from observation, that Moser was not a very good coach. He had some success as a head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock, but despite good talent, his teams at Illinois State from 2003-2007 were not very good and were poorly coached, IMO. I thought the same about his first couple years at Loyola, too. That is one of the reasons I was not strongly in favor of the MVC adding Loyola in 2013, since they were one of the worst teams in the Horizon under Moser. And even their first year in the MVC, I thought they underachieved. But Moser has become a better coach these past few years, and I think he did a great job and deserves the award this year. I think coaches learn a lot the first few years they are head coaches, and if they are willing to adjust, they become better coaches. And Moser has. He does not have the kind of exceptional talent that Wichita State and Creighton had in past years, yet Loyola dominated the league just as well as any team has in recent memory. Moser deserves a lot of the credit.
So congratulations to Porter Moser!
