  • Current Pomeroy Rankings

FWIW - some people think this is similar to formulas that may be used by those on the Selection Committee - in fact Pomeroy himself has been CONSULTED by the NCAA Selection Committee.

Nobody in the MVC currently sits in a spot that might expect an at-large bid...
but this current ranking about 1/3 way thru the season does closely match what a lot of people thought the Valley race would look like..
with Missouri State, UNI and Loyola at the top, Bradley, Valpo, ISU in the middle, and Evansville, SIU, InSU & Drake in the Thursday slots

    Overall rank --
    80 - Missouri State
    83 - UNI
    88 - Loyola
    104 - Valparaiso
    109- Bradley
    127 - ISU
    150 - Evansville
    151 - SIU
    174 - Indiana State
    198 - Drake

Does Pomeroy recognize strength of schedule?

Of course, it is one of his main factors...but not the only one

it is complex but he does try to explain it

in the end, the NCAA Selection Committee - more often then not, uses they "eye test" or the "smell test"...
..in other words, they use their own intuition and pick the teams they want and overlook OBJECTIVE factors....
They do so because they then can defend their selections with an answer that nobody can refute. They can say they have
more knowledge than you do and their opinions are more worthy than anyone else's.

I think it's a total load of BS- it would be like taking game 7 of the 2016 World Series and saying...
"well, I know the Cubs won, but The Indians had better metrics, efficiency ratings and
all the analytical calculations argue that we should give the World Series trophy to Cleveland.
So, the Indians are the Champs and to he** with the score!"

This is why I asked the question.

There are so damn many of these evaluation, that are inconsistent with others, that makes me wonder what to believe. I think Ill just watch the games from now on.

If you just look at strength of schedule, other than UNI, ISUr, and maybe ISUb, the rest of the valley should be absolutely embarrassed by their strength of schedule. It just pulls diwn the rest of the league when you have schools who schedule like this. My Aces and the Braves are two of the worst offenders.

          RealTime RPI update:
          UNI- 23rd RPI, 5th SOS
          ILST- 76 RPI, 16th SOS
          UE- 106 RPI, 260 SOS
          Valpo- 111 RPI, 256 SOS
          LUC- 120 RPI, 315 SOS
          MoState- 131 RPI, 261 SOS
          BU- 158 RPI, 323 SOS
          SIU- 193 RPI, 252 SOS
          INST- 219 RPI, 123 SOS
          DU- 221 RPI, 209 SOS
Cheering with pep and vim for the white and purple!

Your link isn't working but I know what you are trying to say...
This year, ISU has a better Strength of Schedule...
I got it...and congrats for scheduling well...we thought ours was going to be a lot better -

but when Bradley put this schedule together - it appeared it was going to be a lot stronger - that's just the uncertainty of it...
Several of Bradley's opponents looked to be among the top in their conference (Weber State was picked 2nd, Little Rock was picked 2nd, San Diego State was picked 2nd, Vermont looked to be a Top 40 RPI team but now has surprisingly fallen, and both Northern KY and Iona have decent RPI's but we missed getting them in the Bahamas...)

But -- Pomeroy takes a lot of other factors into account such as whether a team holds an opponent under their averages, etc...

Vermont was pretty good last year as I recall.

Hopefully we'll schedule up next year. But for now, I can't wait till the conference season starts and the guesswork about contenders and pretenders ends as matters get settled on the court. I think there are going to be a lot of nail-biters and this will be one of the most entertaining conference seasons -- and tournaments -- in a long time.

Of course it helps that Bradley is in the mix for the first time in a long time. Go Braves!
                Yajusneverno!

The SOS of the MVC teams is important for getting at-large bids and for getting a good seeding in the NCAA Tournament. It hurt MVC schools like ISU a couple times in the last decade when they had 25 and 28 wins and did not get at-large bids. And it hurt Wichita State last year when they were given and unbelievably low #10 seed despite a 30-4 record, a top 20 ranking in the AP Coaches Poll, and a Pomeroy ranking inside the top 10 nationally.
This season, the MVC looks a lot more certain like a 1-bid league, so SOS won't matter as much.

Agree with you Coach, and especially if the Valley as a conference slips out of the top ten conference rankings.
