Bradley basketball fans have their first chance to see the 2017-18 men's and women's basketballs teams take the court this season when the Braves host their annual Red-White Scrimmage Saturday at Renaissance Coliseum.

    Question....

does anyone think we should schedule at least a few of our games at Renaissance Coliseum....
recalling the discussions that it does give us some benefits such as strong home court advantage, better profit margin, better control of dates & times, full take on concessions, etc...

Here is one of our older discussions:

Certain games where attendance would obviously be well over 7,000 (Wichita, non-conf. games with BCS schools) could still be played at the Civic Ctr.
Of course, the Civic Ctr. people would scream their heads off and the political fall-out would have to be handled.

Don't forget the Bradley Red-White scrimmage today at 2pm!!

ISU had their similar event last night, Hoopfest...

their scrimmage was limited to just 10 minutes due to only having 10 players available...
The Pantagraph's Jim Benson said: "Like the men, the women had only 10 players available because of injuries."
the scoring went like this..the final score of the 10-minute scrimmage was 31-21
Pantagraph's Benson as well as a few observers all noted that no defense was played!!
    Phillip Fayne 12 pts
    David N'Diaye 10 pts
    William Tinsley 8 pts
    Jerron Martin 8 pts
    Milik Yarbrough 4 pts

Nobody else scored...it appears the other players available were Taylor Bruninga, Isaac Gassman, Keyshawn Evans, Matt Hein, Madison Williams - all were either shown in photos from the Pantagraph or described as playing by fans who posted about the Hoopfest. Chastain DID NOT play.

Elijah Clarance was in a walking boot, Christian Romine is not with the team.

Drake has their Blue-White scrimmage today at 10am! Evansville's is next Wednesday.

a couple comments from their fans...
..one said it wasn't very high scoring
another comment was that Antonion Pilipovic, Colton Kolowski, and Connor Gholson did not play at all - odd for a scrimmage where they wouldn't lose eligibility by playing.
Newcomer/transfer Samm Jones played very little. Crowd was sparse.

Disclaimer- it is rarely possible to make valid conclusions or predict the future based on what happens at early intra-squad scrimmages, and I did not see the ISU scrimmage last night. There is usually very little defense played at these kinds of scrimmages, and often a lot of shots are taken by players who won't see much playing time when the season starts.

However, the Redbird scrimmage might point to a potential weak spot for them. The teams combined were just 2-23 from the 3-point range, and one of those, according to a Redbird insider who was at the game, was made by their 7-foot post player David Ndiaye. It is not too likely he will be making many during the season. In his 2 complete seasons with ISU so far, he has not attempted a single 3-pointer.

Last season, ISU was an excellent three-point shooting team. They shot 36.9% from three. Only Loyola's 38.9% was better among the current MVC teams. They made an average of 8.4 threes per game, and only Drake's 8.7 made threes/game was better among the current MVC teams.

The players on this year's ISU roster made a total of 55 three pointers in Division I last year (55-164). 53 of those were made by last year's backup point guard Keyshawn Evans (53-139) who is coming off shoulder surgery on his shooting arm, 1 by reserve forward Madison Williams (1-19), and 1 by reserve guard Matt Hein (1-4). Every other returning D1 player on their roster was 0-for. So it will be interesting to see where their perimeter points come from.

gotta remember - this was a 10-minute scrimmage with a running clock - in which the 10 players launched 23 shots from behind the arc...

so are they gonna shoot 50+ per game during the regular season, or was this just a decoy to make the other teams prepare for the wrong style of play?

Women's scrimmage features two 10 minute halves. After the first 10 minutes, Red leads White 23-22.
Impressions so far- improved ball handling and passing, and shooting looks improved. Both squads are playing at a fast tempo and taking very quick shots inside the first 10 seconds of the shot clock. Despite the fast pace, there have been very few turnovers. They sometimes seem to force a shot too quickly, instead of looking for a better shot. But overall I am seeing significant improvement over last year. The team should be deeper as well.

A large contingent of visitors just came in and sat in a section opposite the bench marked "Reserved". I am assuming they are recruits and parents or coaches. There are also a couple kid who look like recruits sitting on the bench side accompanied by coaches, and mingling with the men's team. It looks like the women's coaches may also have some visiting recruits.

The fast pace continued for the second 10 minute half. There was more substituting. The final score was 39-34.

The men are now taking the floor and a three point competition is starting, featuring 3 teams comprised of one player from men's and women's teams.
Nate Kennell and Gabi Haack are team #1.

Second team was Darrell Brown and Annika Schlueter.
Third team was Luuk van Bree and Madison Dellamuth.

Team 3 sank 19 threes to win. Luuk was on fire!

Both teams starting off with a lot of passing, looking for opportunities to attack the basket. White leads 6-1 after 4 minutes.

Childs is impressive on defense...very quick, and blocks shots. Red team struggling to score though. It is White 12 Red 1 after 8 minutes.

The White team looks like the probable starters, and maybe the top 7 guys. They definitely have the better shooters. White now leads 18-1 after about 12 minutes.

JoJo looks like has increased his vertical jump. He has a couple incredible dunks with his head almost at rim level!. White continues their hot shooting while Red struggles. Score is now 25-5 with 6 minutes left.
