FBI and US Justice Dept. charge several college basketball coaches with corruption

Uh oh - bad news for UConn.......

The Hartford (CT) Courant (newspaper) just published some of the pages of the testimony that the FBI got when interviewing one of the UConn assistant coaches (Glen Miller) - the Courant got the pages via FOIA from UConn. The FBI had kept the pages secret but they had forwarded them to UConn to let them know what they were investigating and then UConn released the pages under a Freedom of Information legal request by the Courant.

Miller tells the FBI that then UConn head coach Kevin Ollie gave $30,000 to the mother of a recruit so that she would be able to move to Connecticut to watch her kid play.

The papers also show that the assistant told the FBI that Kevin Ollie was relying on his own personal agent to funnel players to him - and that he even fired his agent for NOT REFERRING ENOUGH RECRUITS HIS WAY!!

The professional agent said "the main reason he got let go (as personal agent for UConn's head coach Kevin Ollie) was for not assisting and helping players get to UConn."

Immediately- UConn runs for cover and produces this laughable denial in which it says the worst thing Kevin Ollie ever did was to unknowingly allow a couple of his players to attend unsanctioned workouts....
the official UConn response totally ignores this more damaging stuff about paying players and paying his agent to refer recruits.

Uh, oh...now DePaul and Head Coach Dave Leitao is dragged into this FBI/NCAA scandal. It is no secret that Leitao was desperate to land Brian Bowen, the recruit that this whole Louisville case is all about. Recall that Leitao hired Bowen's high school coach at La Lumiere, Shane Hierman, in the hope that it would get Bowen to commit to DePaul. Then he apparently felt the need to go even further, and hired Bowen's AAU coach Tim Anderson as an assistant, too! Unprecedented!-

And now in Louisville's lawsuit against Pitino, intended to get them out of paying off his contract after they fired him, the discovery process has uncovered this text message sent by Pitino to Louisville Assistant Coach Kenny Anderson (who has also been fired), that said-
“DePaul trying to pay Bowen 200 K to come there. Crazy world.”

That is pretty damning. DePaul's name has been rumored to possibly be involved in this scandal, but until today it was nothing more than a rumor. Now the secret is out and DePaul mightexpect a call from the FBI if it hasn't happened already.
I expect DePaul administrators to quickly meet and make some kind of preemptive move as damage control like firing Dave Leitao, or at least suspending him pending further investigation. The only problem is that most of his coaching staff is comprised of these recently-hired assistant coaches who also have dirt on their hands.

Plus we all know they tend to look the other way when their big-boy buddies like Kentucky get caught.
It is a crime to lie to the FBI and the FBI can threaten people with jail, and massive legal costs to defend themselves (see the Muller investigation for examples of this technique to squeeze people and make them dish dirt on others). I do not know if the FBI will investigate DePaul, but if they do, they have the means to get people to talk by giving them immunity from serious crimes and saving them from financial ruin and massive legal costs. I think they have already given immunity to one of the Adidas people involved, which is how a lot of this came out and this whole investigation blew up.
