The Hartford (CT) Courant (newspaper) just published some of the pages of the testimony that the FBI got when interviewing one of the UConn assistant coaches (Glen Miller) - the Courant got the pages via FOIA from UConn. The FBI had kept the pages secret but they had forwarded them to UConn to let them know what they were investigating and then UConn released the pages under a Freedom of Information legal request by the Courant.

Miller tells the FBI that then UConn head coach Kevin Ollie gave $30,000 to the mother of a recruit so that she would be able to move to Connecticut to watch her kid play.

The papers also show that the assistant told the FBI that Kevin Ollie was relying on his own personal agent to funnel players to him - and that he even fired his agent for NOT REFERRING ENOUGH RECRUITS HIS WAY!!

The professional agent said "the main reason he got let go (as personal agent for UConn's head coach Kevin Ollie) was for not assisting and helping players get to UConn."

Immediately- UConn runs for cover and produces this laughable denial in which it says the worst thing Kevin Ollie ever did was to unknowingly allow a couple of his players to attend unsanctioned workouts....
the official UConn response totally ignores this more damaging stuff about paying players and paying his agent to refer recruits.

By the school trying to cover up the problem it shows they are culpable. DEATH PENALTY!!!! It needs to stop somewhere

    • tip of the iceberg - anyone who thinks UConn is the only school doing this
or that Kevin Ollie is the only coach doing this - is very naive

I agree! It is like a epidemic and the NCAA has looked the other way. Allowing it to happen while boasting they are enforcing the rules

You forgot to add one other institution...the NCAA... for failure to enforce its own rules and looking the other way

Florida players reportedly took impermissible benefits from a well known GAMBLING kingpin and his henchmen...(rental cars, drinks, parties, possibly payoffs)
but the story is much more complex and involves feuds between the players and the gamblers, fights, guns, and possibly gang-related hit squads...
The alleged gambler, Devante' Zachery - aka 'Tay Bang' - told police he would give UF players discounts on rental cars at Enterprise, according to a report obtained by First Coast News. Zachery said the players tried to attack him in May with airs...

...so he chose to try to beat that offer rather than notify the NCAA of the alleged violation...

Uh, oh...now DePaul and Head Coach Dave Leitao is dragged into this FBI/NCAA scandal. It is no secret that Leitao was desperate to land Brian Bowen, the recruit that this whole Louisville case is all about. Recall that Leitao hired Bowen's high school coach at La Lumiere, Shane Hierman, in the hope that it would get Bowen to commit to DePaul. Then he apparently felt the need to go even further, and hired Bowen's AAU coach Tim Anderson as an assistant, too! Unprecedented!-
                        From USA Today-
Is DePaul hiring assistant coaches specifically to lure Brian Bowen?
Brian Bowen is one of the nation's top rated remaining uncommitted basketball recruits. The Class of 2017 five-star La Lumiere small forward is a consensus top-20 national recruit, and most expect him to choose between Michigan State, Creighton and Arizona, with T

And now in Louisville's lawsuit against Pitino, intended to get them out of paying off his contract after they fired him, the discovery process has uncovered this text message sent by Pitino to Louisville Assistant Coach Kenny Anderson (who has also been fired), that said-
“DePaul trying to pay Bowen 200 K to come there. Crazy world.”

That is pretty damning. DePaul's name has been rumored to possibly be involved in this scandal, but until today it was nothing more than a rumor. Now the secret is out and DePaul mightexpect a call from the FBI if it hasn't happened already.
I expect DePaul administrators to quickly meet and make some kind of preemptive move as damage control like firing Dave Leitao, or at least suspending him pending further investigation. The only problem is that most of his coaching staff is comprised of these recently-hired assistant coaches who also have dirt on their hands.

                        • but if all they did was make a verbal offer to pay Bowen $200K - how will FBI or NCAA ever find anything they can use as evidence? ...
...surely they wouldn't just take one text from an opposing coach as say-so proof...

when Anthony Davis went to Kentucky, several (three different schools' coaching staffs) sources had heard that UK offered to pay Davis' family $200K and probably did in some surreptitious way...
but of course they could never find a paper trail for proof...

But this could be much different that the Anthony Davis case. It may not be just the NCAA that is investigating, but the FBI. The NCAA doesn't have any subpoena power, or other means to get people to talk, and it is not a crime to lie to the NCAA. Plus we all know they tend to look the other way when their big-boy buddies like Kentucky get caught.
It is a crime to lie to the FBI and the FBI can threaten people with jail, and massive legal costs to defend themselves (see the Muller investigation for examples of this technique to squeeze people and make them dish dirt on others). I do not know if the FBI will investigate DePaul, but if they do, they have the means to get people to talk by giving them immunity from serious crimes and saving them from financial ruin and massive legal costs. I think they have already given immunity to one of the Adidas people involved, which is how a lot of this came out and this whole investigation blew up.

Former University of Louisville head basketball coach Rick Pitino said he knew DePaul offered to pay prospect Brian Bowen $200,000 to play at DePaul, a violation of NCAA rules, court documents show. “Coach DePaul [sic] trying to pay Bowen 200 k to come here. Crazy world!” Pitino wrote in a text message to Louisville’s former assistant coach,...

???I think people might have gotten some bad info and passed it along to their boss,??? Carter wrote. ???No money was ever offered. We were hiring a staff that all had connections to Bowen. HS Coach, AAU Coach and obviously I had connections to past teams. People shouldn??™t believe what they read.???
