They are people who are not affiliated with the university program. The NCAA has no authority over them and they are not subject to any NCAA rules. The NCAA can't even require them to submit to questioning, and they can't sanction them. Even if proof ever arose of the recruits getting money, there is nothing to tie that money to the school or the coaches, so only the athlete gets into trouble. Most of the time, their names and identities are never are known to the public nor even the highest level administrators at the universities. In the past, the money usually came from boosters of from the coach himself which could be connected to the school. But now the money comes from the shoe companies, and that made it easier to investigate as a federal crime, allowing the FBI to get involved.
That is why this FBI investigation has been so groundbreaking. The FBI was able to pursue and prosecute these people for crimes that the NCAA never could, and they were able to use methods like getting people to cooperate with them, and secretly recording conversations to obtain damning evidence and build their cases against the coaches.
And now the FBI is able to turn some of those caught so far to give evidence against others. The NCAA is not able to do that. Part of their problem

    • another player dropping out of school and going pro-
DeAmthony Melton at USC - reportedly FBI has pretty damning evidence he payments were made to steer Melton to go to USC & to an agent

Security camera footage is inconsistent with the FBI’s account of an August meeting that is a key part of the college basketball bribery case against USC associate head coach Tony Bland and would-be sports agent Christian Dawkins.

I hope you are right that there is massive punishment. However, I have a feeling that if there are enough top programs involved there will not be the kind of punishment, from the NCAA, that something of this magnitude deserves. Basically nothing happened to UNC when a mid-major would have likely gotten the death penalty.

          • unfortunately - since so much of the embarrassment will be on the NCAA for allowing such widespread cheating & huge cash payoffs for buying players..
that NCAA will probably just declare it would ruin the sport to punish everyone - so let's all just hold hands, sing Kumbaya and have one big start-over...
You wait & see - the NCAA will avoid handing down punishments even if 3 dozen top head coaches are in federal prisons for bribery & tax offenses.
They will say- oops...they have suffered enough, no need for any punishment from our end... it has happened before...

I would normally agree with this but the FBI is involved so I don't think the same old normal sweep it under the rug will happen. When this type of situation happens in other institutions they have egg on their face, people clamor for a wholesale shakeup. I can only hope people understand this should not happen. For this not to happen again their has to be wholesale change in the NCAA. If the basketball world is to change as we know it then the NCAA has to change as we know it

Remember there is a lot of money at stake. I would not hold my breath for wholesale change that punishes the guilty.

I actually don't live there anymore, but I would go over there occasionally when I did.

Wichita State gets named as a school who had/has current or former players receiving payments.

Players at basketball powers such as Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Michigan State and Kansas may have committed NCAA violations that were uncovered by an FBI investigation, according to Yahoo! Sports.

I have heard stories from reliable sources that Wichita State coaches have paid players.
One example, take it for what its worth-
A couple others on this board were with me and might confirm this story- at a tailgate party before a soccer game in 2008 when Chris Roberts was on a recruiting visit to Bradley (he eventually committed to Bradley that weekend). Chris Roberts told us that he was also being recruited by Wichita State and that when he was on campus there, he was offered "a lot of money" to commit to them. I can't say exactly what he meant by that, but I do not think he was making it up. Chris came from a very strong Christian background, and felt that was not the right thing to do, so he eliminated them from his choices.

I think we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg so far. Let see all the evidence!

                        • Watch how SHOCKED and surprised everyone will act....
the NCAA already put out a statement acting totally shocked and surprised as if they never dreamed anyone was cheating...

a few coaches have already issued statements and they are all completely flabbergasted and shocked!!!

how is it that I am not shocked nor surprised....many mid major fans saw the overwhelming evidence of this cheating decades ago and virtually every season since....
Everywhere the NCAA (or anyone, including investigative reporters who uncovered the OJ Mayo cheating, the Reggie Bush payoffs, the Derrick Rose cheating, etc...)
...everywhere they have ever looked, they have found and seen the cheating but they always blow it off and let them slide....
Even 15-20 years ago - completely obscure players were being given THOUSANDS of dollars and hookers ( LINK ) - and NCAA just winked!
HOW dare they act like this couldn't be happening!!!

                          • Another breaking bit of news-

ESPN is now reporting that FBI wiretaps recorded Arizona head coach Sean Miller discussing paying top recruit DeAndre Ayton $100,000 to ensure that he signed with Arizona-
FBI wiretaps intercepted multiple conversations between Arizona basketball coach Sean Miller and sports agent Christian Dawkins in which Miller discussed a $100,000 payment to ensure star freshman Deandre Ayton signed with the Wildcats, sources told ESPN.

And another article about the extent of the FBI investigation, and where much of the information came from and who the FBI targets initially were-
Documents in the feds' case on corruption in college basketball show the methods Christian Dawkins and ASM Sports used to curry favor with potential clients.

Federal prosecutors on Tuesday added additional criminal counts to the indictment of Adidas executive James Gatto, alleging that he conspired to provide cash payments to the families of former basketball players at Kansas and NC State.
