"Elgin touched on a variety of issues throughout his 33-minute address to the media, including conference expansion.
The Valley was looking for either one or three programs that were ready to make the move immediately and Valparaiso
was the best fit according to the league. A committee has been established to continue to look at expansion possibilities,
although Elgin didn’t go into details about what schools were being considered. Murray State, Milwaukee
and Omaha all received site visits in addition to Valparaiso in the spring.
Elgin went on to explain the Valley’s strategy for discussing basketball scheduling, both in the conference and nonconference slate.
The Valley employs a three-tier system for nonconference scheduling where each conference team is given a set of guidelines
from year to year based on the perceived strength of their team. Should a Valley team perhaps be worthy of at-large consideration,
the conference expects the team to schedule a bit more ambitiously than a team that is in a rebuilding phase.
Elgin shared those guidelines with the men’s basketball staff on Tuesday and reiterated during his remarks that
Valley teams were allowed just one non-Division I game each season."
FWIW- Valparaiso has amazingly good local coverage and their beat guy Paul Oren is really active all year long reporting on Valparaiso basketball...
This story was even covered by the Chicago Tribune but we didn't get any coverage here...
