  • NCAA Tournament expanding to 72 teams?

    Let's not go crazy. The tournament does not need 96 teams. But 72, that makes sense. The rumblings have picked up this summer. Coaches want it. It'll help a few keep jobs because they will get in instead of being left out. Mid-majors feel the same way.

    Or maybe even 96 teams...
    ..expansion would mostly be for the INCLUSION of all the conference regular season champs...
    ..so that would mean teams like ISU last year would get in -

    "Good teams from major conferences have margin for error;
    good teams from mid-major conferences do not. Modest expansion can correct this.

    ...let's investigate using the opening round for a floating number of regular-season champions who are not otherwise selected. ...
    The additional wild cards -- last season's could have been regular-season winners Illinois State, UT Arlington, Monmouth and Belmont --
    would play the last four at-large selections ...Winners become the four No. 12 seeds in the main bracket."

    I have always advocated for the regular season champ to automatically make it in and have the tournaments for teams that catch fire at the end. Conference teams seem to battle for 3 months for first place but NCAA put more emphasis on a 3 day tournament to determine who went to the Big Dance
