  • MVC Coaches' Hot Seat

Just wondering what's the chance of any coaching turnover in the Valley in 2017-18...

Bradley- not a chance - Brian Wardle is rebuilding the right way and fans appreciate it. Anyway - barring something really stunning, no way BU would buy out his deal.

Drake - Nope, pretty safe since it's Niko Medved's first year

Evansville - lot of talk on their message board that this is a do or die year for Marty Simmons...so I have to think he's one of the two or three MVC coaches that ARE on the Hot Seat

Illinois State - Dan Muller is safe - just got an extension

Indiana State - Greg Lansing might just be in some trouble if he has a really bad year. BUT- he has had that comfy rollover contract that means he automatically got extensions - and altho now that the rollover is cancelled, there's still four years left (three by spring of 201 and it's really gonna be hard to buy him out.

Loyola - Porter Moser is safe

Missouri State - Paul Lusk has to be one of the other guys who is on the hottest seat....
but again, the "rollover" clause he has had COULD make it expensive if he has some success and they fire him. So he's kinda gotta win the MVC Tourney or I think he's one of the most likely in the MVC to be gone.

UNI - Ben Jacobson is probably the safest guy in the MVC - he'd have to finish last 3 years in a row for them to wanna fire him.

SIU - Barry Hinson's seat is about as hot as Lusk's ...Lots of SIU fans are counting the days til Barry is gone. They even wanted him fired after he won the MVC Coach of the Year.

Valparaiso - Matt Lottich is perfectly safe in his 2nd year.

Lansing seems to have got his a$$ in gear & became a lot more directly involved with recruiting. Hate to say he had been slacking in that regard for a few years.............but he had been slacking. It appears that the incoming talent is better than what had been coming in the last 2-3 years. There was a "keeper or two" each season recently but he may have attracted a handful of "keepers" this time around?

Time will tell (but not too much time at this point) if he has finally came to the conclusion that you can only win with talent not by thinking you can out coach anyone anymore with whatever players you might have. It is called the maturation process..........takes some longer to reach it.

I believe Hinson got an extension last summer.
But it may be for this year and next only. But I don't know if SIU can afford to buy him out any way you cut it.

You are right - it was reported that he signed a 2-year extension that has him under contract until 2020
SIU men’s basketball coach Barry Hinson will continue to lead the Salukis for an additional two years, a spokesman for university athletics said Tuesday. The coach signed a two-year contract extension in September that will last through the 2019-20 season, said Tom Weber, associate director of Saluki Athletics media services. The extension preserves the terms of his...

so if they choose to buy him out at the end of the 2017-18 season - they would have to buy out 2 years' worth...but that is reportedly spelled out in his contract thus...
"Hinson is free to end the deal at any time without any financial repercussions, but SIU would owe him a buyout of $175,000, his original base salary, per year through 2020 if it made a change."

So Hinson could leave any time without owing SIU a penalty,
but if SIU fired him in spring of 2018, they'd owe him $350K

Missouri State just removed the unilateral 5-year extension clause from Paul Lusk's contract should he make the NCAA- could be - in fact almost certainly is a sign they are gonna find a way to buy him out...

Agree with your earlier comments about Coach Wardle. But my advice to him is just don??™t have a season record of 32-3 or make it to the Sweet 16 by pulling off 2 big upsets in the NCAA tournament.

and my advice to Geno is & would have been (in 2011) do not under any circumstances ever go to work for an administration headed by an incompetent leader who will run the entire Athletic Department into the ground and ruin your chances of being a head coach again
