However, as recently as March 8 after Ohio State was eliminated from the Big Ten Tournament, the AD (Gene Smith) announced that Matta's job was safe and that Matta would be given another year to "put in place the things he feels we need to have in place to be able to get back to where we want." Ohio State had a 7-11 Big Ten record (17-15 overall) this past season, their first losing Big Ten record since 2004. 2004 was also when Matta was hired and it was the last time OSU failed to win 20 or more games.
However, after a very underwhelming spring recruiting class, Smith apparently decided a change was necessary. He announced today that he was letting Matta go strictly due to poor recruiting. Matta will be paid for the 3 remaining years on his contract.
But you are right, the timing is strange. One almost expects a Bo Ryan-type story to hit the fan.

Here is an article with 7 possible names to replace Thad Matta at Ohio State.
One of the names, no surprise, is Gregg Marshall-
Marshall makes a little more than $3 million and has always said he is not concerned about the money, and likes it at WSU. And he is moving to a bigger conference, and has virtually his entire team returning next season. But on the other hand, there are few schools that can offer as much money as Ohio State. Their football coach, Urban Meyer, is paid more than $6 million a year. Could a whopping offer of $5-6 million attract Marshall?
