This just goes to show we live in a time of people thinking they are entitled to do whatever they want.
Most of these kids today would be in the fetal position crying their heads off if they played for coaches 40 years ago, actually just 20 years ago.
As Chris Reynolds said you think your coach is tough, really? Think about playing for BK like he did.
Even older college coaches are still pretty tough on the players. (ex: Izzo, Coach K just to name 2)

There's always 2 sides, I know -- but remember this one where some kid who was "connected" - expected to make the team and get playing time because someone "higher up"stepped in and demanded it of the coach?

now PJS has a little update to their coverage and appears to be strongly defending Coach Brown

When dozens of families all say the same things, it's hard to believe they are making things up. But I have heard similar stories about Brown's coaching style for many years.

          I have a couple objections-

First- who said "dozens of families" said the same thing?
Nick Vlahos reported "some parents have accused of intimidating players and abusing them verbally".

Of the "30 people who signed up to speak to the board" - referenced in the first article -
that 30 included - "..Others included teachers, former players and some parents who spoke in support of Brown."

          Vlahos goes on to say:
"According to several eyewitnesses, almost 50 teachers and 30 former players attended the board meeting to show support for him."
...wow - that's about EIGHTY (80) people all opposing those parents!

So - then using that same logic...
When MULTIPLE dozens of teachers, coaches and players all say the same thing, it is hard to believe they are making things up, too.

Last- the sum total of the "allegations" as reported (and again I doubt anyone knows the whole of both sides of the story)
          are
"..that Brown verbally abuses and intimidates players"

and the ONLY specific claim by any parent that is cited is:
"..Williams said Brown bullies the players with profanity and name-calling.
She said nine current and former players, including her son, have told her
that the coach also uses physical intimidation, although she stopped short of
          accusing him of physical abuse.

Players are called ???stupid or ditsy??? and are kicked out of practice ???for not
remembering plays,??? she said. In one instance, Williams said, a player told
her Brown chased him into the locker room when he refused to leave. The
coach also threatened to kick players off the team if they complained to their
          parents, she said."

If there are "dozens of families" saying the same thing, I don't think the report mentions that.
In fact, Vlahos went on to say:
".. In fact, much of the testimony Journal Star reporter Aaron Ferguson mentioned in his story about the meeting is laughable."

            coach

It is another story of a mommy getting involved when her coddled little boy wasn't measuring up to expectations of him and all the other players. So now it is time to blame someone else. Unfortunately now she has gone and made it real tough on that boy now that it is all out in the open with names.

a couple more specific criticisms have been made public

and apparently none of the parents actually heard these words themselves but are citing what they were told was said...

"According to her son, Dietz said, Brown belittled a player by asking, ???Did you
just get off the short bus???? Dietz also corroborated complaints by Karin
Williams, whose son Brett is a junior.
In a letter previously emailed to the board, Williams alleged Brown uses
extreme profanity with the players, using phrases such as ???are you (expletive)
stupid???? Both parents objected to Brown allegedly threatening to kick players
off the team if they complained to their parents."

              whoa...call DCFS -

99% of the people defending and criticizing in this situation were not present at practices to know what really happened, including myself. Could it be an issue of whiny kids/parents who didn't get the playing time they wanted? Sure. Could these concerns be genuinely warranted? Sure. No one knows except the people present at the time, and even they are on both sides of the issue, framing the situation based on their allegiances. I'm basically saying there is no way the "true" story will ever be known, whatever it is.

Exactly...you and I could watch the same practice and have a different view of whether or not language was abusive or not

I would say true to a point. There has to be a point where profanity would lead to us all agreeing it is too much in a high school setting. Not speaking of any specifics to this case.

Irnonically Collin Dietz' parents home schooled him for a year and moved him back a class striclty so he could get more playing time at Washington. Now he is transferring to Metamora, according to my sources. Could be sour grapes.
With that said, we sat directly behind the Washington bench at the Pekin Holiday Tournament and listened to Brown berate his players the entire game. Never had one positive thing to say. No one was spared and he really came down on JJ Gudet that game. Complete jerk. From what we saw, it certainly bordered on abusive, but no one else from that program had ever complained, at least not publically. He is the Bobby Knight of local coaches.

Brown's coaching pattern has been well known to everybody including Washington High School staff, administration and the School Board for several years....probably for most all of the THIRTEEN YEARS he's been at Washington HS.

Some of what's being said is true but the debate is whether it crosses the line into "abuse" or "inappropriate".

So I guess the most OBVIOUS question is that if everyone has known for years that this is exactly how he is and how he coaches, why do the gripe just start now?
Why, if his behavior was unacceptable, did they NOT approach him any time in the past 12-13 years and do something?

                              I beg to differ-
his behavior was an issue - almost CONSTANTLY - as far back as the 1980's and early 1990's

He was reprimanded and fined - and then even placed on a ZERO-TOLERANCE policy (2000) - all of which took place appropriately regardless of whether he had a winning season or not. Then he was fired even tho he was in the middle of building a team that would make it to the Championship game in 2002.
I don't deny that his ability to win gave him huge support but it goes a bit beyond that.
