regarding the Matt Chastain local coverage...

..it was pretty similar - but the local coverage had slipped tremendously in recent years...

BUT the clincher for me was they just jacked the price up yet again - about the 4th time in the past couple years...
Now the renewal for the PJS is almost $2/day..
They say the circulation is 70,000-90,000, so just do the math...
That's revenue of $140K to $180K per day.
Works out to $40-50 MILLION per year just from subscriptions, then they must make plenty on advertising considering 1/2 the paper is ads...

Why can't they hire someone with that $50-100 million budget that can cover local sports without copying and pasting from another source?

I have also noticed the coverage of small colleges in this area is almost zero. They will do an article on Eureka College but that is all. Illinois Wesleyan, Monmouth, Knox, Lincoln College are next to nothing. Maybe you might see something on special events but everyday coverage....nothing!!!!!

I have not been able to figure out why the local papers and news concentrate so much on national coverage. If they would both get back to better small town coverage I would pay money for their services. Give me some news that I can't get in the palm of my hand.

well Leroy is not in the PJS area, nor is Bloomington so why more coverage for a walk on at ISU then for local colleges and high schools?

Eureka College has been landing many local kids lately that make the news relevant. Peoria, Washington, Brimfield, Pekin, Eureka, Metamora, Dunlap, East Peoria high school athletes are now Red Devils. That would make sense to report on.

The front page of the paper and the first page of the sports section usually are full of stuff the average pjs reader could care less about. If the Cubs win they are on the first sports page. If they lose look on page 5.

but if there's a track meet, a citation issued to a Bradley player pre-2011 or a fight at a bar not involving Phil Luciano, then that gets plenty of front page coverage..

They have cut back on their coverage of all the local college and high school teams so I have cut back on my subscription. They were late on their delivery one Sunday morning. I called and said I had not received the paper yet. They said they would bring it out but not until after 10am. I said why so late. They said it was their policy replacement papers did not go out until after that. I said I have a policy also. If I don't get my paper I cancel my subscription

Well they must have changed their policy where I live - everyone's paper used to get tossed up by the house,
now they toss it on the ground at the end of driveways and many land in the gutters and don't even get picked up for a couple days.

But it's never really been the delivery that I have complained about 'til now, it's been the lack of content....yet the overwhelming number of editorials BASHING the same very politicians that they themselves endorse & TELL US to vote for!
Just recently - two stories that involved friends of ours....a Peoria high school student was robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot of his high school (in the middle of Peoria, and in a separate incident a man entered one of our local hospitals and attempted to murder a nurse - and yet neither story got even a mention in the newspaper at the time the incidents happened.
But I sure hate to think what would happen if one of the BU players got caught at Big Al's.

                          well, here's something interesting....
As much as I love reading about local sports & seeing the box scores, I finally decided to cancel when they billed me for renewal of my subscription at $167 for 3 months!! (almost $800 per year if you add what I tip the delivery guy just to get the paper thrown 100 feet out in the driveway!)

Then...surprise, surprise....within a week after cancelling, I start getting e mail and mailed promos offering the same 3 months for less....
NOW - they are offering to let me re-up for 3 months for only about 1/4 of what they were previously billing me for.

What?? If they were willing to give me the 3-mo renewal for under $50 then why were they trying to rip me off by billing a LOYAL 40-year customer (I have been subscribing since they had both morning & evening editions!) for almost $170?
But I know the trick - as soon as they lure me back they will jack that renewal cost right back up the next time - so ....nevermind...

yeah.....my wife hates that time of the year when the PJS is up for renewal ..

When I die I'm pretty sure she will cancel that before starting funeral arrangements

I'd be cancelled by now if I didn't want something to read while drinking coffee. I don't bother looking at the so called editorial section since the election.
