  • Mid-Major Mayhem?

I like ESPN's marketing of Big Monday, Super Tuesday, and ACC Wednesday, but Throwdown Thursday needs to make way for Mid-Week Mid-Major Mayhem. Each Thursday, ESPN or the deuce could show triple headers of conferences nobody knows anything about outside Championship Week and a possible first round upset in the NCAA tournament. Possibilities could include games that feature the NEC, Mid-Continent, and WCC one week. That could be followed the next week by a MAAC, MAC, and WAC triple-header. Next week would see a CAA, MVC, and MWC triple dip, followed by the America East, Horizon League, and Big West. Of course, contractual obligations probably make this next to impossible. ESPN does not have rights to cover the Pac-10 (Fox does). Still, it would be cool to see something different from time to time. This past weekend, I got to see Wagner vs. St. Francis (NY) and San Diego vs. Pepperdine on the tube. The games weren't all that good, but it was a nice change of pace from the standard Big East, Big 12, ACC contests that are constantly put before us. Say what you will about Dick Vitale, but I really believe the guy is such a good ambassador for college hoops that he would be just as prepared and excited to cover Sam Houston State vs. SE Louisiana as he was for the Pittsburgh-Geoergetown game on Saturday. Oh well, it's nice to dream.

It's a great idea. But because the midmajor conference don't include many major state schools, or major TV markets, ESPN jsut won't be interested. It may be great basketball, but it doesn't draw as many viewers as a game between the last place teams in the Big East or ACC

I don't know about including ALL of the mid-major conferences. Who wants to watch a game where nobody in the conference has a winning record? If you included a select few, such as the MVC, MWC, Horizon League and CAA, there might be a possibility.
