The article actually says that his brother, Oliver, was cited not him.

These NCAA violations all happened at University of South Florida while Orlando Antigua was the head coach and his brother Oliver was an assistant.
Illinois assistant basketball coach Orlando Antigua “satisfied his obligations as head coach” at South Florida while recruits were receiving impermissible benefits from one of his staff…

Even though the NCAA ruled that there was no evidence that Orlando, now an assistant at Illinois, knew of his brother's providing illegal benefits to multiple players, many people, including me find hard to conceive that the head coach was completely unaware that it was going on right under his nose.

Furthermore, if Orlando Antigua indeed was not aware of the impermissable benefits, then why did South Florida fired him this past January 3, in the middle of the season?

The portion of the post by T stated "NCAA also just ruled new Illini assistant Orlando Antigua violated NCAA impermissible benefits rules". This was clearly inaccurate based on the article he linked. I was merely clarifying that this information was incorrect. I have no personal information on what he did or did not know, and did not intend to insinuate otherwise. Again just merely making sure that the information was corrected.

Yes, you are 100% correct. I was not trying to dispute your information. The Chicago Tribune article I posted a link to confirmed what you said.

I was merely posting my opinion that I have a hard time believing the head coach knew absolutely nothing about it, since he should be overseeing everything that goes on in the program, including the budget and spending of resources. Just the fact the USF fired him midway through last season suggests they felt he was in some way complicit.

so, wouldn't surprise me of the best La Lumiere kid they have leaves and heads there.
As predicted here, former La Lumiere player Jalen Coleman-Lands has announced his intention to leave Illinois and transfer elsewhere-

This is somewhat surprising, as Coleman-Lands was the highest rated recruit John Groce had in his time at Illinois. He would have been one of the top 2 returning scorers (8.0 ppg), and he would have been the most experienced returning player. He started 15 of 35 games last season, and averaged 24.3 minutes per game (3rd highest on the team last season). He was also one of the Illini's top 3-point shooters, their best free throw shooter, and he would have been their best returning perimeter defender. Though new coach Brad Underwood has some nice talent coming in, losing Coleman-Lands is a big loss to the team. He would probably have been a starter on next year's team, and would have provided some needed offense and defense.

Losing him may have some effect on next year's record in the larger picture it will have little impact. Next year is certainly a rebuilding year as will be the next. The more scholarships open to Underwood, the better it is for the program. The talent at Illinois, in recent years, would have been competitive in the MVC, but it sure wasn't in the Big 10.

Seems this only happens in basketball -
when schools hire a new football coach you don't see 50 players transferring..

Football is more of a skilled position sport. Players seldom play more than one position on offense and at the most two on defense, to the point where they can receive a scholarship. There actually are quite a few transfers in college football you just don't hear about them because they usually aren't skilled positions. Alabama had their backup quarterback transfer during last season because he knew his playing time was doomed. We had what, eight transfer a couple years ago when Geno got canned.

In recent years (what's that? 5 years?), the talent at Illinois would have been competitive with maybe second thru the middle of the pack in the MVC, but it sure wouldn't have been competitive with Wichita State (or Creighton 5 years ago - or UNI in 2015).

Not many teams in the country were as good as Wichita or Creighton the past 5-10 years. That's why they're looking in the rear view mirror at the Rat of the Valley.

So agreed.... UIUC would NOT have been competitive with Wichita St or Creighton (or UNI in 2015).

So don't try to suggest UIUC woulda been competitive in the MVC with a generic blanket statement like you made suggesting they woulda won the league or been in the thick of winning the league and been NCAA bound because they "woulda been competitive" in the MVC.

They still woulda been OUT of NCAA tourney regardless if they were in B10 or MVC.

And in all actuality... had they been in the MVC and "been competitive"... they woulda gotten less consideration for the NCAA cause their "competitiveness" in the MVC would NOT have gotten them a sniff at the NCAA Tourney.

Illini & Brad Underwood land another late commit for this fall...
It is Greg Egoigbodin - a really raw kid that was committed and signed to UIC then asked out of his LOI and now verbals to Illinois.
He had few other offers beyond UIC and a few mid- & low-majors...kinda of an Ibby Djimde-type...

Being competitive in a conference does not always equate to winning a conference. As for Illinois, they probably would have been beaten out of the league title by Wichita and Creighton and maybe UNI in 2015. However compared to the rest of the league, in my opinion, they were heads and tails better than Bradley, Evansville, Drake, Loyola, Missouri State, SIU, ISU-red and ISU-blue. The physical play and athleticism in the Big 10 is far superior to the MVC. Illinois was dreadful under Groce. Had the above mentioned MVC schools played the schedule Illinois played during the conference season they would have won far fewer games.

Sometimes the ignorance, sometimes the arrogance, and sometimes both.... it all can be truly entertaining to see and hear.
