. . . but of course had the Shockers not beaten Illinois State in the MVC tournament final, the decision makers likely would have deemed Wichita State not worthy of the NCAA tournament this year, or so Jerry Palm of CBS told us during that game. Amazing how the same players will improve so much over the next six or seven months.Yajusneverno!

College basketball writer Jon Rothstein's Preseason Top 25 for 2017-18-
He has Wichita State at #8, which might be a little high now that their top 2 players are out with fractures in their feet.

The preseason Kenpom rankings are out-
The highest ranked MVC team is at #87, and it is not who most might think.
Here are the MVC rankings-
Illinois State #87
Loyola #93
Missouri State #99
UNI #129
Valpo #131
Bradley #133
SIU #148
Evansville #160
Indiana State #203
Drake #223
The preseason rankings are based on a computer algorithm that takes into account where the team finished last season, the quality of the players who left and returned, and weighs in the quality of the new recruits or transfers have been added to the team. It also takes into account injuries. Pomeroy admits the method has a large margin for error.
His algorithm is the same one he used in 2016, explained here-
I suspect this is the lowest that the top MVC team has been ranked (ISU at #87). But it is still strange that ISU is ranked the top team.

I think his rankings include roster changes up until the past week or so, which should include the Hawkins & McIntosh losses. But they may not include the injury to Clarance and the loss of Romine. But those two players don't seem impactful enough, IMO, to put ISU at the top of the MVC in his rankings.
