Mike Daum played high school basketball at a small school in Nebraska. He had a pretty good high school career, but went virtually unnoticed, except by South Dakota State. An SDSU coach saw him make 12 three pointers in one AAU game the summer before his senior year and they saw enough potential in him, and offered a scholarship, the only D1 scholarship offer he got. When he got to SDSU, he was felt to be too skinny and not good enough to play at that level, so they asked him to redshirt, which he did. He committed that summer.
When he got to SDSU, he was felt to be too skinny and not good enough to play at that level, so they asked him to redshirt, which he did. He used the redshirt year to get stronger and better, and last year as a freshman he averaged a team-leading 15.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg, and averaged 55.3% from the field, and 44.6% on threes. His average of 29.3 points per 40 minutes lead the nation.
He was named 1st team All Summit League and was voted this season's Preseason POY this season as a redshirt-sophomore. NBA people started calling about him.
This season he averaged 25.0 ppg (tops in the Summit League, and 2nd highest average nationally), 8.1 rpg (3rd in the Summit), and 41% on threes, and was named the Summit League Player of the Year. Not bad for a kid who had just one lower-D1 offer.
