  • Which MVC coaches are on the "hot seat"?

In alphabetical order, and any comments reflect my opinions or are based on reliable information I have heard:

Bradley: Coach Wardle in his second season showed enough improvement, especially down the final stretch to give encouragement to the long-suffering Bradley fans. He has at least 3 more years on his contract (from what I hear) and clearly is safe.

Drake: They have an interim head coach & have already begun a search for a new coach.

Evansville: Marty Simmons has been at Evansville since March, 2007 (10 years), and there are a few fans who would like a change. Evansville finished 8th this season (they were picked 9th), but they are coming off the 2015-16 season wheh they finished tied for 2nd place with a 25-9 overall record. He may have the toughest recruiting task at Evansville and injuries hurt him this year. But he appears pretty safe.

Ilinois State: Dan Muller had his best year in the 5 years he has been at ILSU (he was hired in March, 2012 when Tim jankovich left to become an assistant coach under Larry Brown at SMU). He is safe, unless he is hired away. His name has already been mentioned unofficially for a few potential higher-level jobs that may open.

Indiana State: Greg Lansing has been Head Coach since he was elevated from an assistant coach in June, 2010, when head coach Kevin McKenna left to take an assistant position at Oregon under Dana Altman. He just completed his 7th season at INSU. He appears safe, though there is a growing minority of fans who would like to see a change made. Also, Indiana State may be in a difficult financial position to make a change.

Loyola: Porter Moser was named head coach at Loyola in April, 2011, and just completed his 6th season. Loyola finished 8th last season, and was picked 7th in the preseason poll, and they finished in 5th place. That is their highest fnish since they joined the MVC in the 2013-14 season. That will keep Moser safe for another season, though next year without All MVC player Milton Doyle his team's expectations could drop.

Missouri State: Paul Lusk was hired on April 1, 2011, just 5 days after Bradley hired Geno Ford. Lusk was a actually a potential candidate for the Bradley job and was contacted, but was not interested in interviwing for it for reasons I will not divulge. They were picked for 4th place, but finished tied for 6th place with Bradley this season. He took over for Cuonzo Martin, and tied for 3rd his first season (with a 9-9 record), but it was downhill from there. He has never had a winning MVC record in his 6 seasons at MSU. There is strong sentiment from the fan base that a coaching change is needed, and many expect it will happen as soon as the MVC Tournament concludes. Lusk is the leading candidate among MVC Coaches to be fired.

Southern Illinois: Barry Hinson was hired in March, 2012, and just completed his 5th season as head coach at SIU. In his 5 seasons, he has finished 10th (2013), tied for 4th (2014), 9th (2015), tied for 4th (2016), and tied for 3rd (2017). Though many outsiders think he has done a pretty good job, and even overachieved considering the limited talent his teams have had, the SIU fan base seems almost universally in favor of firing him. Many, if not most, of the threads on their message board either start or become all about firing Barry. So he may be the second most likely MVC coach to be fired (behind Paul Lusk), but I think he will more likely be given another year.

University of Northern Iowa: Ben Jacobson was elevated to Head Coach in March, 2006, when Greg McDermott left to take the Iowa State job. That makes Jacobson the "Dean of MVC Coaches", as he just finished his 11th season. They were picked 3rd and finished tied for 3rd with a 9-9 conference record. They are 14-15 overall though, and are in danger of the first losing season under Jacobson. But UNI won the last 2 MVC Tournaments upseting higher seeded teams and going to the NCAA Tournaments the last 2 years and winning games. So even though this was a slightly down year for Jacobson, this is a no-brainer. He is safe.

Wichita State: No explanation needed. Gregg Marshall was hired in April, 2007 and just finished his 10th season at WSU. He has averaged about 30 wins over the last 6 seasons, been ranked in the Top 25, and made the NCAA Tournament each of the last 6 years. He is safe unless he feels it is time to move on. He will get bigger and better offers again this year, but so far he has said he is not interested in leaving Wichita State.

So only 2 coaches "on the hot seat" IMO- Paul Lusk and Barry Hinson, and Lusk's seems slightly hotter than Barry's.
Though it is a good possibility that there will not be any changes other than the Drake job.

I doubt anyone else gets fired...
Drake will hire but even tho there are calls by fans to replace Lusk, Barry and even occasionally Marty, I'd be surprised if they make the change this year

Think Lusk is safe only because of $$$$$ owed him.

But the public universities like Missouri State can usually tap into more money from the general funds (taxpayer money) as they always seem to do when they need it.

For the record, in 2014 Lusk received a 3-year extension to his contract that ran through the 2018-19 season, and his base salary is $305,333 per year.

So it would take MSU $610,666 to buy him out. That is chicken feed compared to the absurd situation the last AD left Bradley in with his $850K per year extension he gave Geno Ford.

I've seen Muller mentioned as a very, very unlikely candidate for the Mizzou job. Even so, it's a testament to how well he's done to even be mentioned for that job.

I would've been surprised to see Lusk let go, so no surprise there. Hinson will be interesting. Seems like their fanbase is fed up with him as you mentioned.

It's pretty nice to be in a position where we're more than pleased with the job Coach Wardle is doing. Much of the Valley can't say that. Looking forward to next year!

Quoting DaCoach "Indiana State: Greg Lansing has been Head Coach since he was elevated from an assistant coach in June, 2010, when head coach Kevin McKenna left to take an assistant position at Oregon under Dana Altman. It might be more accurate to say a MAJORITY OF FANS WHO WOULD LIKE TO SEE A CHANGE MADE. As Popeye says "enough is too much". On a 3 yr slide of below .500 play and 20 losses in this past season. The future not looking good.

That is unfortunate, as just within the past couple years his name was being mentioned as potential to "move up"

Indiana State finished in a tie for last place with Evansville at 5-13. And they lose Everett Clemons (2nd leading scorer and top rebounder), Matt Van Scyoc (3rd leading scorer and top 3-point shooter), T.J. Bell (4th leading scorer, 3rd leading rebounder, and top FG%), and Niels Bunschoten to graduation. They do return top scorer Brenton Scott, starter Laquarious Page, and All-Freshman Jordan Barnes.
And Greg Lansing has a 4-man recruiting class coming in, and they are all signed-
Tyreke Key- a high scoring 6'2" combo guard from a small school in Tennessee

Elafayette Stone- a 6'9" forward from Meorgia

Daniel Hunerman- a 6'9" forward from Austria

Devin Thomas- a 6'8" junior college player who averaged 12.1 ppg and 6.7 rpg

So they should bounce back a little next year.

Three of those guys may not contribute right away, but Tyreke Key is a real scorer...
regularly putting up 30 points & outscoring everyone in the nearby Nashville, TN area.

He plays for Clay County High School in Celina, TN, a small school (Class A, Tennessee's smallest class size of five classes) that has an enrollment of 260
Celina, TN (just south of the Kentucky border in Central TN - about 100 mi NE of Nashville) is described as "remote rural" and has a population of 1489.

                        Here's a typical game report...with Tyreke Key scoring 32 of his team's 48 points and 22 of his team's 55 points.
But the caliber of opponents is extremely low. Just about all their opponents have enrollments in the 200 range.
It will be interesting to see how he adjusts to DI -
A similar kid that Evansville recruited, Harris Brown, was a 30-35 ppg scorer from a small high school but didn't even last a full season at Evansville before he left to play elsewhere.

The Springfield News-Leader newspaper seems to have definitely taken a stance on this issue..
and sounds like they are actively stumping for Paul Lusk to get fired....
if not now then start planning for it to happen next year....and demanding "enormous improvement"...

This whole story pumping up all the negatives and bemoaning how this should have been done already sounds eerily familiar...
I hope if they do it they have better success than when our media engineered the same thing here back in 2011.

                            Greg Lansing

Didn't I hear at some post or on the radio that Greg Lansing's wife is the AD at IND st?Wouldn't that be a conflict of interest if and when it came to replacing Greg?

Angie Lansing was married to Greg Lansing, but they have been divorced a couple years. She also is not the Athletic Director at Indiana State University.

Angie Lansing was the assistant athletics director for business operations and senior woman administrator, and was was named their Interim AD back in Dec. 2015 when their previous AD stepped down. And she applied for and was a candidate for the full time AD when they did their search a year ago.
But they hired Sherard Clinkscales instead-
Indiana State University President Dr. Daniel J. Bradley announced today (Feb. 28) that Sherard Clinkscales has been named the new Director of Athletics.

However, Angie Lansing did receive a promotion after she failed to get the AD position-
Angie Lansing Promoted To Senior Associate Athletics Director
Indiana State Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales and President Daniel J. Bradley announced today (May 4) that Angie Lansing has been promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director in addition to her continuing duties as the department's Senior Woman Administrator.

Angie Lansing is in her 16th year on staff for the Indiana State University Athletics Department, She was named the Deputy Athletic Director in August 2024 after

When she was a candidate for the full time AD job, she was interviewed and asked about how she might handle the issue of the men's basketball coach if she were to become the AD-

An issue not brought up at the public forum, but one that's been on the minds of many ISU fans, is how Lansing would approach administrative management of men's basketball coach Greg Lansing, to whom she was married.

"Greg and I have a very professional relationship. I respect him. I think he does a great job and has a lot of good ideas to advance his program. Just like any other coach, I want to help him do that. We need to find better ways to market and promote not just men's basketball, but all sports. I have no concerns about the relationship," said Lansing, who said that topic had not yet come up during a series of day-long meetings on Monday.
