  • Rick Pitino loses his cool

Last night in Louisville's game at North Carolina, Rick Pitino went ballistic after he heard something a North Carolina fan said to him, and screamed at and started to move aggressively toward the fan as the coaches and fans were walking out of the arena for halftime. Pitino was restrained by his assistants, and was escorted to the locker room. There are differing reports about what was said- some twitter reports say it was just generic "you suck" comments, other reports say it was something more personal about the strippers that Louisville has admitted to hiring to "entertain" basketball recruits.
UNC ejected the fan, and Pitino returned for the 2nd half. Pitinio might have had a short fuse since North Carolina beat Louisville.

Here is another view from a fan's cell phone video-

In his postgame press conference Pitino criticized the fan and called him a coward for walking away when Pitino challenged him. Personally, I think the fan's reaction showed a lot more maturity than hothead Pitino, who apparently would have preferred to take the confrontation to a physical level and fight the guy.

    Look Up To Coaches

We should be able to "look up" to a coach for their leadership and example.

I can see both sides...sure he's had his own issues, but...
...he has to put up with a lot of childish verbal abuse in 20 different road venues a year but there is obviously a breaking point, and I can hardly blame a guy who finally after years of it does get a bit upset...

Getting upset at a heckler is one thing, but what Pitino did wen't a bit too far, IMO
If he felt the heckler was inappropriate, vulgar, too personal, or was threatening him, all he had to do is ask for security to remove the guy. I suspect the UNC people would have quickly obliged. Instead, he physically confronted him, then later, from the safety of a private, closed press conference, attacked the guy verbally as a coward for not wanting to fight with him.
Considering some of his previous ethical issues with public extramarital affairs, paying for his mistress' abortion, hiring strippers and prostitutes to attract recruits, flashing obscene gestures at opponents fans, or the numerous legal issues involving his players, etc., I think he is a very poor example for a D1 head coach, IMO.
But he keeps winning at Louisville and bringing in tons of money, and that is all that matters.
