  • Player of the Year

usually the MVC player of the year is one of the league's top scorers - often one of the top scorers & rebounders.

Has there ever been an MVC POY that wasn't in the league's top 30 scorers and wasn't even inside the top 20 rebounders?

Will be curious to see who end up as the POY. I would think Paris Lee of ISU Red is the leading candidate as he leads the Mo Valley in both Assists at 5.0 and in Steals at 2.2 while he's 12th in scoring. Milton Doyle of Loyola is the only other Valley player who is in the top 5 in Points, Assists and Steals. Jeremy Morgan of UNI is 5th in Points, 2nd in Steals and 12th in Rebounding. Wichita's leading candidate could be Markis McDuffie as he's 19th in Points, 7th in Rebounding and 9th in Steals. Deontae Hawkins from ISU Red could be on the first team as he's 7th in Points and 4th in Rebounding

Paris Lee can start dusting off a spot on his mantle...
the guys who vote - coaches and the media - have pretty much all said who they think the POY is...and there are only 3 games left, so unless something really weird happens, he's got it sewn up.

BTW- Adam Emmenecker won the Player of the Year in 2008 when he wasn't among the Top 20 scorers and was not inside the top 20 rebounders

        Here's an interesting piece...

Milton Doyle expresses his opinion on who should get the MVC Player of the Year

        "I think I deserve it"

That article also seems to hint the top two guys in the Player of the Year consideration are Markis McDuffie and Darral Willis...
(they cite the analytics & metrics people)

Here are the stats of the main contenders but of course there are intangibles such as team leadership and clutch ability...

-Milton Doyle 15.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 4.3 apg, .353 3-pt shooting, Loyola is 7-9 & tied for 5th but have lost 5 of their last 6!
-Paris Lee 13.1 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 5.0 apg, .417 3-pt shooting, ISU is 15-1 and in 2nd place
        -Markis McDuffie 11.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 2.0 apg, .375 3-pt shooting, Wichita is 16-1 & 1st place
        -Darral Willis 10.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 0.6 asst, .000 3-pt, Wihcita is 16-1 1st place
        -Jeremy Morgan (Preseason POY) 15.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 2.9 apg, .416 3-pt shooting, UNI is 97 & 3rd place
        -Deaontae Hawkins 14.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.1 apg, .421 3-pt shooting, ISU is 15-1, 2nd place

Both Jaylon Brown (Evansville) and Alize Johnson (Missouri State) have the most eye-popping stats, but are likely not in the running due to their team's lower division position - but then maybe Doyle should be held to the same standard.

The hype is highest for Paris Lee, so I'll put my money on him.

During today's teleconference, four different coaches appeared to be hyping their guys for Player of the Year (Moser, Muller, Marshall, Jacobson) - even tho it wouldn't matter since all the ballots are already in and the winner will be announced tomorrow.
