Just checked the CalDavis website. They had a picture of a packed arena. Looked bigger than I thought it was. Seating arrangement sort of reminded me of Carver Arena. They are having a good year.

it is not a strong conference but they are winning it at this time nonetheless...
historically their attendances have been 800 to over 1000 but there is an excitement going on now and they've been drawing crowds of 2000, 3000, 4000 and even over 5000
They won the conference year before last and are gunning to win again this year and they have exciting players, including the sure Newcomer of the Year and even odds-on Player of the Year Chima Moneke..
who just happened to play at Northeast Community College - right where our guys have been to watch Vance Johnson. Northeast CC is in Nebraska, not Iowa.

Give credit where its due.
JL has helped turn around UC-Davis MBB a lot, in their league.
He also had success at BU in years 4-5, with the miracle end of season NCAA run.

He is a 0.500 NCAA Head Coach in mid majors/lower who has had 4-5 seasons of some success out of 15. Good, but not great, and certainly not legendary.
It would also be fair to say, JL's impact on schools' donors and fan bases has been much better than his overall coaching record.
He will not be on Mt Rushmore for College Basketball Coaching, MVC Basketball Coaching, or even BU Basketball Coaching (save the miracle finish in 2005-06).
JL did not accomplish what Robertson, Anderson, Osborne, Versace, and even Molinari (who was a MVC Coach of the Year) did while at BU.
I know this may heretical to some, but, I think it is a fair assessment based on his overall resume as a MBB HC.
Hopefully he continues to move UC-D in the right direction.
Now, back to Bradley MBB, hopefully Wardle and the University leaders can
get/keep things moving in the right direction after several years of disastrous decisions in finding the coach/AD to take BU higher than JL did.
It's all about recruiting now...BUilding for the Future

However at the current time they offer 5,900 seats available for basketball.
but in the past they had one games (1999) when they nearly sold out at 7900 but this article seems to say the configuration won't allow for that now.
But if they keep drawing more & more, just maybe an expansion project is in their future?

figured there had to be something about that

for years they've been fortunate to host 1 or 2 games with intense local interest - such as Sacramento State or even Stanford...which buoyed their attendance average
but they are building a fan base that once the conference games start, they are drawing 1500, 2000, even 3000 or more...
but their season ticket base is still only about 600-700...so they gotta hope a sustained sequence of winning years will change that.

That is half of where it was when the previous administration began all their destructive moves.

if you pause right at 3 seconds, or 6 seconds or 12 seconds
you'll see numerous banks of folding bleachers at the upper reaches of the arena....kinda similar to the folding bleachers in the upper level of the Peoria Heights gym and other places.
those are the extra 2000 or so seats that could get their attendance to about 8000, but they are not currently being used nor sold, so right now, 5900 is a sellout.
BTW-
Coach Les has four solid kids coming in next year.... kids who should help sustain their success
Point guard TJ Shorts (Saddleback CC, 24-3 and #1 ranked much of the year) averaging 17 ppg, 6 assists, 5 rebs, 35% on 3-pointers
(California has 93 junior colleges that are not part of the NJCAA and those kids get recruited mostly by west coast schools ) They are part of the CCCAA.
Logan Strom - a solid 6-8 post player who's putting up double-doubles but...he is also the #2 best football recruit in the state...
Gio Nelson -a good player from Southern CA - an athletic wing who averaged 15 ppg, 5 rebs
Delveion Jackson- a 3-star player from Idaho; athletic 6-5 shooting guard - LINK

UCD , lost in OT to tighten the race in the Big West..
Long Beach State has Loren Jackson - son of Walt Lemon & Shayok Shayok's former Chicago Julian HS coach...
When we were recruiting him out of a Florida prep school - he was said to be 5-9 - LINK
But watching him last night - he's gotta be at least 3-4 inches shorter than that... but he is a good point guard and helps them..
