  • Jerome Merrit

    What's the latest here?

He is fully involved in basketball activities just can't play in games right?

What kind of impact will he make immediately?

He's a good sized guard who I hope will help with defense and rebounding and scoring. Along with a improved Koch and Child's and a Improved Luuk. Donte as a Sr.

Just hasn't been much talk of him so I was wondering.

Jerome is extremely talented physically & athletically so he's got a ton of potential but still needs to develop scoring ability...

Does anyone remember Drake's Leonard Houston?
Merritt reminds me a lot of Leonard Houston - who started slow at Drake and averaged just 2 ppg his freshman and sophomore seasons..

By the time Houston was a senior he led a 30-win Drake squad to an NCAA berth, averaging 14 ppg, 5 rpg, excellent defense and a lot of steals....and the Chris Roberts-like ability to make that incredible play that changed the game.
Time will tell - but you've seen him - there aren't many players in the MVC that are built like him.
Leonard Houston #4 Play of the Day - Alley oop at the Drake - Butler Game

Leonard Houston (5) GUARD - 2007-08 ? Earned second team All-Missouri Valley Conference playing honors, while also being named to MVC Most Improved Team...more

Yes, as a redshirting player, he can participate in all team activities and practices, but if he plays at all in a real game, he'll lose his redshirt.

And Merritt is not a guard. He is more of a forward type of player.
He is listed on the roster as a forward-
Jerome Merritt (20) Forward - HONORS & AWARDS MVC Honor Roll: 2017 Bradley Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (2): Fall '16, Spring ‘17 2016-17 • FRESHMAN Redshirt

He doesn't shoot the ball well, and is not a ball handler. But he could give Bradley a different kind of player, similar to what Loyola's Aundre Jackson does. Jackson is a strong, athletic 6'5" 230 pound forward who was Loyola's leading scorer until Doyle moved ahead of him after the 35 points on Saturday.
Page Not Found (404): It looks like you're lost... The page you are looking for no longer exists.

I hope the redshirt year helps Jerome develop his offense and defense, but as of now, it's hard to say what kind of impact he might have next year.
His only playing action this season was 5 minutes in the exhibition game against UW-La Crosse (redshirting players are allowed to have played in exhibition games but not regular season games) in which he had basically a zero stat line, except a couple turnovers-

DC, with your insights and seeing Merritt dunk over a standing Koch Barr, he must be very athletic and a guy that can go to the basket, dunk and rebound? Or is he a player that is raw and needs to develop shooting and ball handling skills?

He is very raw and needed to develop his skills. A redshirt was ideal for him.
