  • 2016-17 Hot Seat

most teams are 1/4 to 1/3 of the way thru their schedule for 2016-17 and already there's talk of what coaches are on the "HOT SEAT"

Certainly the one we have been hearing the most about here in Illinois is the Illini's John Groce, although I think his solid 2017 recruiting class with Jeremiah Tilmon may have cooled the hot seat a little.

Anyway - concentrating on the MVC there are always a couple coaches on or near the hot seat..

-the one that was hottest was at Drake, but Ray Giacoletti is now gone so it waits to be seen if Drake hires a permanent head coach before the end of the season or do they just go with their interim then hire in the spring.
Certainly it makes it VERY HARD to recruit if nobody knows who the head coach is gonna be, so they need to be looking and thinking RIGHT NOW.

-Seems Barry Hinson's name comes up every year whether he's at Missouri State or, as now, at SIU.
One thing that is really, really STOOPID for the Saluki fans is that they ALWAYS seem to have a "Fire Barry Hinson" thread right at the top of their fan message board.
SERIOUSLY - they have to know that any and ALL future recruits (or their parents) always check what the fans are doing/saying when they are being recruited by a certain school. We know for a fact that many recruits & their families and frequented BradleyFans.com and some have even posted under somewhat anonymous names.

Anyway - how stupid is it to hurt the very team you claim to be a fan of by posting or continuing a thread titled "Fire Barry Hinson"!!!
Those ignorant fans need to get a clue.

also - Barry Hinson is still signed thru AT LEAST 2018 - and maybe 1-2 years longer as there's a rumor he got an extension after his Coach of the Year award in 2016. So if his finish for 2016-17 is bad enough, expect him to be on a really hot seat this spring...it took a Coach of the Year award in 2016 to keep him there.

-Evansville's Marty Simmons' name gets mentioned on the hot seat occasionally but a very good year in 2015-16 has now earned Marty an extension through reportedly 2019 or 2020, making it next to impossible that he'd be fired any time soon.

-then the last guy on or near the hot seat would be Missouri State's Paul Lusk. But, despite some fans' calls to head a different direction, Lusk was given a long contract extension thru at least 2019, then in March of 2016 was given a strong "vote of confidence" by his administration - so I doubt he's going anywhere for at least a couple years.

-then the rest - BU, ISU, Loyola, InSU, UNI, and Wichita, are all doing well enough or just recently hired and are almost certainly all safe.

Per their beat reporter today. A 2 year contract extension was signed back in September

SIU mbb coach Barry Hinson signed a two-year contract extension in September, @thesouthern has learned. Story upcoming. No raise in deal.

That had previously rumored, so then the current contract would have Barry there thru at least 2020 unless fired or bought out..

I find it interesting that in the Illinois vs. Indiana game today in Bloomington, IL...
some fans are calling it a battle between coaches on the Hot Seat.

Indiana's Tom Crean had the Hoosiers in the Top most of the season but has lost his first 2 Big Ten games to Nebraska & Wisconsin & lost his last 3 overall...but he's signed thru 2020 and his buyout is said to be in the $4 million range..

John Groce seems to always be on the hot seat but has a nice 2017 class coming in...

so honestly I don't think either is at risk this year of getting fired...

Tom Crean getting some unpleasant press over some post-game comments

"I've never coached a team with this lack of maturity ...
... a group of juniors who have no ability to see past themselves and what it takes to be successful as a team."

Tom Crean has reached his boiling point. The Indiana bench boss put his team on nuclear-level blast following a disappointing 75-63 defeat Sunday at the hands of Michigan, attacking the team's lack of composure under pressure."I've never coached a team with this lack of maturity when they face adversity," Crean said following the loss, according to Adam Derengowski of WSBT.One player Crean identified as pulling his own weight is sophomore forward Thomas Bryant, who Crean believes is doing his best to produce in a bad situation."Thomas is trying to lead a team and isn't getting much help," Crean said before suggesting some of the blame lay with the team's younger players. "Thomas is trying to make up for a group of juniors who have no ability to see past themselves and what it takes to be successful as a team."Despite sounding off on his players, Crean didn't claim he's free of any responsibility for the Hoosiers' recent slide."I'm not shirking responsibility one iota," Crean said, according to Jeff Rabjohns of Scout.com. "If I've learned one thing in nine years, it all falls on me."The loss signifies the first time Indiana has been swept by Michigan since 1994-95.

the latest (latest one of several that have been started) thread on the Saluki board calling to fire Barry Hinson, has now reached 130 pages....

you gotta wonder if the SIU fans are totally destroying any chance of getting anyone good, qualified or capable to ever want that job if they display that kind of hatred and lack of civility towards their own head coach..
            Remember -
Barry Hinson WON the MVC Coach of the Year Award last spring!

It's only been a couple years since another MVC schools was so harsh when their coach was fired with fans and even the University President trashing on the guy..
then when that very school (and Prez) went to hire his replacement, they got turned down cold by every single one of the first 12-15 candidates they offered the spot to even tho they kept upping the offer higher and higher and higher to the point where the next guy was STARTING at a salary nearly DOUBLE what the guy they just fired was making!! And many of the guys who turned down the job, preferred to go back and resume a far lesser spot at a far lesser school, earning less than half of what they turned down.

You gotta ask - what the HE** would cause so many coaches LOOKING for a chance to move UP in the profession to turn down exactly what they've been looking for at TWICE the salary they were making? I guess it is indeed possible to screw yourself that badly when you treat your head coaches so horribly. The position becomes poison - unfillable.
In the end, that school bid up to $800,000 per year to finally lure a guy with limited success, zero post-season success, and bungled it so badly that it caused a multi-million lawsuit that had to be paid off. Talk about a fan base or an admin treating their guys so badly that they shoot themselves in the foot.
Hope SIU doesn't make so many of those mistakes and send their program back to the DIII level for a decade.
