Joe Stowell to be honored at events this weekend

PEORIA, IL - Joe Stowell, an icon of Bradley Athletics for more than 70 years, will be honored during the year's first Braves Club Game Day Luncheon, presented by Busey Bank, Friday and during halftime of Saturday's men's basketball game versus Chicago State at Carver Arena.

Joe will turn 90 years old on Dec. 24. All I'll say is that this should have been done years at. Thankfully, we now have an administration who recognizes and appreciates all Joe has done for Bradley.

Actually there was an 80th birthday party for Joe that was held at the Michel Center on campus. I attended and Snell was the emcee. Mark Dohner, Tom Les and Rick Malnati also spoke. It was a luncheon also and quite entertaining. Several former players showed up for that also. Steve Kuberski, Roger Phegley, Chuck Buescher, Steve Doty, Joe Billy McDade were also there. A few years prior to that there was a summer alumni game held in honor of Joe at the Fieldhouse. Several former players attended that as well such as Levern Tart, Alphonse Saunders, Roger Phegley, Bobby Humbles, Jim Zimmerman just to mention a few. It was hot in that old barn but it was a lot of fun. Joe wore his classic plaid pants from the 70'd and they still fit. Hopefully more players show up this weekend.
