Here are the players named to the Preseason All Conference teams:
First team
F Markis McDuffie, Wichita State
F MiKyle McIntosh, Illinois State
G Jeremy Morgan, Northern Iowa (Preseason Player of the Year)
G Brenton Scott, Indiana State
G Paris Lee, Illinois State
Second team
G Milton Doyle, Loyola
G Dequon Miller, Missouri State
C Shaq Morris, Wichita State
F Sean O??™Brien, Southern Illinois
G Reed Timmer, Drake
Here are the current MVC sortable stats-
Preseason POY Jeremy Morgan is currently 8th in scoring at 14.7 ppg, and he is shooting a surprisingly low 38.8% from the field (though he is 43.9% from three). But he does many other things that help his team win. He is 4th in rebounding with 7.5 rpg, by far the best rebounding average among guards. He is #1 in steals with 3.83 steals per game, far ahead of the 2nd place player who averages just 2.29 steals per game. And he is 3rd in blocks with 2.33 per game, the only guard ranked in the top 10.
Brenton Scott leads the MVC in scoring with 19.3 ppg, but Markis McDuffie is not even in the top 20 scorers. One reason for that is because Wichita State has been blowing teams out, and McDuffie and the other starters have not played a lot of minutes. And the other 2 first-teamers, Mikyle McIntosh and Paris Lee are putting up very good numbers justifying their picks on the 1st team as well.
The 2nd team:
Milton Doyle is 10th in scoring at 14.3 ppg, though that ranks second on Loyola to newcomer juco Aundre Jackson's 15.9 ppg.
Dequon Miller of Missouri State may have underachieved so far averaging just 10.8 ppg and ranking 23rd in scoring. He was the MVC's 3rd highest returning scorer from last year when he averaged 12.7 ppg. Some of the reason is the emergence of new juco point guard Ronnie Rousseau who has taken much of the point guard duties away from Miller.
Shaq Morris may be the biggest underachiever so far on the All MVC lists. He is only playing 15.4 minutes per game (9th on his team) and averaging 7.4 ppg and just 2.5 rpg. He ranks 5th on his own team in scoring, and he is 9th on his own team in rebounding.
Sean O'Brien of SIU is 18th in scoring with 12.3 ppg, but he is leading the MVC in rebounding with 8.3 ppg.
Reed Timmer was the top returning scorer from last year in the MVC when he averaged 16.8 ppg. This season, he is 3rd in scoring, averaging 16.3 ppg, more than twice anyone else on Drake.
A few other stand-out performers in the MVC so far who did not get Preseason All MVC recognition-
Jaylon Brown of Evansville is 2nd in MVC scoring with 18.6 ppg
Deontae Hawkins of ILSU is 4th in MVC scoring with 16.0 ppg, and second in rebounding with 7.6 rpg, and has outplayed his 1st team All MVC teammate MiKyle McIntosh.
Aundre Jackson of Loyola, the biggest surprise player so far. He was an unheralded juco recruit who has not started any games for Loyola, but leads them in scoring so far (15.9 ppg- 5th in the MVC), and is rebounding over 5 per game.
Ryan Taylor of Evansville is a transfer from Ohio U. who is 6th in the MVC in scoring with 15.4 ppg. He is shooting almost 40% from three, and he is shooting over 90% on FTs to lead the MVC.
And Darrell Brown, Jr., who leads all freshmen in scoring with a 15.3 ppg average to rank 7th in the MVC. Brown is the only freshman among the top 30 scorers in the MVC!
