  • Ex-Brave Josh Cunningham hurt

Josh had a huge dunk to pretty much win the game for Dayton but landed awkwardly and hurt his knee or ankle. He was carried off the court and looked to be in some serious pain. Hopefully it's not season ending.

    Just ran across this update:
ESPN's Andy Katz provided an update on Cunningham's injury during halftime of the Oregon-Baylor game, reporting that Dayton is very concerned about the injury, adding that the sophomore forward could be out for quite some time.

Dayton announced after the game that Cunningham will be examined Wednesday, per Dayton beat writer David Jablonski.

That looked very bad with the way he came down on that left knee.

I was watching the game when it happened, and I don't think he did anything wrong. It was just one of those unfortunate injuries. I agree if he knew the end result dribbling it out was a better option. However, I don't think he chose the wrong thing because he didn't expose himself to a higher injury risk than anything else he did in the game.

          another MVC injury...
Loyola's Matt Chastain also suffered a serious knee injury in their last game (38-pt blowout over Eureka) and is said to possibly be out for a while - suspect he might consider redshirt if it is more than 6-8 weeks

The early report from Dayton about Josh Cunningham's injury is better than feared. There is bruising in his left knee, but they have not found serious damage. They are still running tests on the lower leg and ankle, and will know more by tomorrow.

Josh had arthroscopic surgery on the same knee prior to his freshman season at Bradley-

Matt Chastain was not so fortunate. His injury was a torn ACL, and he will require surgery, and will not play the rest of this season, and will get a medical redshirt.

..3 days and still no word on what Josh Cunningham's situation is.
A bone bruise inside the knee can be a very serious injury and take months to recover but they are saying they still do not know the extent of the injuries in his knee and ankle.

Josh Cunning ham was found to have a torn ligament in his left ankle (in addition to what was earlier described as a "bone bruise" in the left knee). He had surgery Friday, and will be out for 3 months-

Unfortunately, Josh used his "redshirt" year with his transfer to Dayton, and thus he will not be able to redshirt this season.
There is some speculation that they might try to bring Josh back to play for Dayton's "stretch drive" at the end of this season, since otherwise, he will lose this season of eligibility anyway.

he can appeal to NCAA to get the medical redshirt anyway and hope for the best but they rarely ever give one in cases of a voluntary transfer.

It has however happened - Missouri State's Spencer Laurie got a 6th year after injury and a year sitting out due to transfer

Dayton coach says Josh Cunningham is ready to return to playing, and might play tomorrow night. There was some thought he would redshirt this season after his injury in November. If he plays, he will eliminate his chance for a red shirt year.
