  • BU vs. UW-La Crosse exhibition- Sunday Nov. 6

2pm this Sunday at CARVER ARENA

UW-La Crosse is a D-III program from La Crosse, Wisconsin - a "stone's throw" from the Mississippi River in western Wisconsin - about 100 miles north of Illinois.
This game will also be their first competition and is an exhibition game for them as well

Their roster has 18 players, 3 of whom are Illinois kids...
Their record last year was 16-10, they did not play a DI opponent last year - their exhibition opponent was DII power Winona State

They return six of their top seven scorers from last year (Yurk, Meinholz, Fritz, Kruser, Wheeler, Norcia) but the guy they lose was their top scorer and rebounder Jared Staege (14.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg)
They do not have much size, returning only 2 players over 6-4....
    6-7 Austin Fritz (8.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg)
6-11 Jordan Machacek - not a factor - only played 12 minutes all last season

so let's get the predictions rolling...

I predict we DO NOT lose to a DIII team this year -
    I say Bradley 82 - UW-LaCross 57

Last year's team beat a D3 school (Edgewood College) 78-42, and a D2 school (St. Joseph's College) 84-65. Neither game was close, unlike most of the exhibition games Bradley played in the previous few years, including one we lost. This year's team is improved over last year, IMO, so this prediction is a slam dunk.
No way the Eagles of UW-La Crosse can stay with Bradley.
Bradley 74 UW La Crosse 52

Bradley will be too big and too fast for the Eagles of UW Lacrosse.

Our upcoming opponent on Nov. 11, Illinois Springfield lost their exhibition game Friday night
          Northwestern 89 - UIS 52

Five Northwestern players were in double figures, Nate Taphorn had 5 pts
For UIS, they were only 4-25 from 3-pt and shot poorly.

            According to Coach Wardle:
The starting lineup for the closed scrimmage against South Dakota State included Koch Bar at center, JoJo McGlaston at small forward, Luuk van Bree at power forward, Darrell Brown at point guard, and Antoine Pittman at shooting guard.
He also said the starting lineup for the exhibition game Sunday against UW-La Crosse would be changed, but that he expected everyone on the roster to get some time.

one report I have heard from the scrimmage was that Jojo was our best player...everyone else struggled to score.

The game-day article in the PJS was relegated to page-2
Can't recall that happening before...I guess there was too little space left after all the XC coverage on page-1.

Wardle does mention a few things from the closed scrimmage..
"We learned a lot about our team,” said Wardle about the scrimmage. “We
had some good moments and some down moments. Overall, there were
some very bright stretches. It was a good learning tool to teach the
newcomers and remind the returners that consistency of habits and staying
true to what we do every day is going to help us stay in games and win.”

Wardle said the starting group would change a bit for this outing, adding that
he expected everyone on the roster to get some time.
“Guys are solidifying their roles right now,” he said. “We have a lot of
                      starters on this team.”

This worries me for a team picked 8th or whatever.

This team is very young and, yes, they have a lot of depth. They have two true point guards that are about equal. They do have some players that will be ahead of the rest of the group but, honestly, the depth on this team is pretty much equal through the first 10 players. Remember we started 4 and 5 freshman last season and might be still starting at least 2 new players that weren't part of the team last season.

Maybe it's not too unusual for a team made up almost entirely of freshmen and sophomores. We saw it last year, too, with a lot of different starting lineups early in the season, then a more consistent lineup and rotation later.

I expect after a few games, the coaches will settle on the best lineup and rotation.
