  • Exhibition games are starting

This season's first exhibition game is DII Eckerd at the Florida Gators..
and as many of these early games go - Florida by all rights ought to blow them out from the start but..

but Eckerd was actually leading most of the way until 4 minutes into the 2nd half but now Florida is pulling away.

The first MVC team exhibition is Friday when UNI Hosts Bemidji - the rest of he MVC doesn't get started 'til November

Indiana State will play today against Cincinnati in a closed scrimmage - per ESPN

      Evansville held their Purple-Orange scrimmage
they streamed it and it's right here if you want to watch
www.GoPurpleAces.com - Video coverage of the 2016 version of Hoopfest at the University of Evansville, courtesy of the Ford Center AV crew.

the men's game doesn't start until 1:08:52 into the video
They said the attendance was 1000, but you judge - looks more like 200-300

Hard to take a lot from it but here's my take....
the entire first 5 minutes - their offense is 100% exclusively - pass around the periphery then take a 3-pt jump shot
there was not one attempt to take a shot or create a shot from inside 20 feet - not one - in the first 15 possession or so (some of which were T/O).
They played 15 minutes - final score 20-10 with 3 of the first four shots (all 3-pointers) going down - so 9 of the 30 pts were scored in the first 45 seconds...then they went pretty cold and a few clunkers & airballs after that.
Solomon Hainna sat out with a cartilage injury in his knee.

Bradley played a closed scrimmage against South Dakota State on Saturday.

Illinois State played a closed scrimmage at Iowa Sunday (today).

I don't have any results to report, and usually we never see any video from these closed scrimmages. But here is a brief video of today's scrimmage between ISU and Iowa, feauring a dunk by former Bradley recruit Christian Williams of Decatur St. Teresa HS-

In the Wichita State scrimmage against Oral Roberts Saturday, here is Jeff Goodman's (ESPN) report:

Told Wichita State won the controlled session of scrimmage, Oral Roberts won 40-minute game, 70-67. Emmanuel Nzekwesi had 22 points for ORU.

Landry Shamet — along with juco products Daishon Smith and Darrel Willis — stood out for Shockers.

The rules do not prohibit info from the closed scrimmages being mentioned or discussed afterwards - and yet most schools still hide everything in secrecy - either due to misunderstanding of the rules...or because they just don't trust NCAA and worry about getting penalized regardless.

The rules DO prohibit promoting the game in advance, having anyone other than coaching staff in attendance, and prohibit publishing of scoring & statistics...but as we have seen - some schools readily tell the outcomes and even post video afterwards.

                        Here's examples -
Creighton put out a story on their "secret scrimmage" - LINK
..Arizona State even went beyond the line & posted the box score and no outrage from NCAA - LINK
Marquette posted video highlights from the "secret scrimmage - LINK - LINK
...and obviously other people find ways to get even more info and video out on the internet - LINK

The MISUNDERSTANDING seems to emanate form the prohibition of media AT the scrimmage - so most schools go the extra step of prohibiting any info about the scrimmage from even being given to the media.

Here's a new article on the rules covering "secret scrimmages"

Marquette's closed scrimmage was against Dayton
but their paper has extensive coverage including all the stats
The Marquette men's basketball team opened up its preseason slate with an 83-79 victory over Dayton on Saturday in a closed, 40-minute scrimmage at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

SIU played a Middle Tennessee State in a closed scrimmage and some discussion on the SIU board indicates that the Salukis did not do well. The word "manhandled" was used, but nobody went into details - but one excuse was that their PG Mike Rodriguez is out with a knee injury.
The Rodriguez injury is a re-injury of something that happened a few weeks ago and sounds a lot more serious this time.... maybe they rushed things a bit bringing him back - LINK

"If Rodriguez's knee doesn't respond well, he could miss the first two months of the season."

Drake has their Madness/scrimmage event tonight

After SIU's closed scrimmage with Middle Tennessee, Barry Hinson says:
"I think the biggest thing we got out of it was that we weren't as good as we thought we were."
(unofficial reports are that they got hammered)
