Gotta think the Freshman of the Year will be one of the top two guys, and that the All Freshman team will be five of the top 8 or 9 guys

I think BOTH Nate Kennell, and especially Jayden Hodgson served notice last night that their names ought to at least be in the conversation when it comes to FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
I know they won't get as broad of consideration as Shamet & Brown since both Kennell & Hodgson are coming on really strong down the stretch and a lot of the teams, coaches, MVC media have not seen then during this stretch that they have been playing so well and carrying the Braves to wins.

Anyway - here are the updated numbers for the prominent MVC freshmen:

Darrell Brown, Jr. 12.4 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.9 apg
Landry Shamet (RS) (WSU) 11.0 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 3.3 apg, .447 3-pt shooting but .507 in MVC play
Spencer Haldeman (RS) (UNI) 7.6 ppg (but 6.2 in MVC play and only 3.0 ppg since Feb. 1st), 2.2 rpg, .324 3-pt shooting
Jordan Barnes (Indiana State) 6.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg, .348 3-pt shooting
Koch Bar 5.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg
        Nate Kennell 5.8 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 1.7 apg, .439 3-pt shooting (.478 in MVC play - 4th best)
Jayden Hodgson 5.3, 1.8 rpg, 1.9 apg, .417 3-pt shooting but .545 in MVC play (BY FAR the best in MVC play)

Dru Smith (Evansville) 5.4 ppg, 2.6 rpg, .282 3-pt shooting
Austin Reaves (WSU) 4.6 ppg (but only 15 points total over the last 10 games), 1.9 rpg
Donovan Franklin (InSU) 4.2 ppg, 1.5 rpg, .264 3-pt shooting
        Juwan McCloud (UNI) 3.9 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 1.5 apg, .191 3-pt shooting

left off the rest under 4.0 ppg but I think we can drop the bottom 3 or 4 from contention...as their impact on their team and their team's wins has been considerably less than the rest

BTW- various preseason previews & writeups had named Shamet (LINK), McCloud (Lindy's Preseason Preview picked McCloud as Newcomer of the Year), and Jordan Barnes as their Preseason Freshman of the Year

The absolute worst preseason preview of all was this one, they missed just about everything by a mile.

Brown is great and a REALLY good building block for you guys going into the future. That said, Shamet will get votes for MVC POY, so I can't see anyone passing him up for FOY. He is one of the key leaders on the most dominant team in the league.

it will boil down to Shamet vs. Brown....either one has the qualifications...

IMO, Shamet will get it, even though he is not a true freshman (redshirted due to injury last season).
Reasons: he plays for the best team, he benefits from more hype, he was higher rated out of high school, and he has been around 2 years now. All those factors affect voters opinions a little, IMO.
I also think most of those voting believe he is just a better all-around player, and I agree that he is.

Also, several preseason college basketball publications have picked Shamet as the Preseason Freshman of the Year for both of the last 2 seasons.
Here are a couple online examples-

I don't disagree with the fact that he's benefited from that extra year. Having a year to learn the system and watch Fred/Ron had to of helped. He looked great in the 3 games he got to play last year. I would have rather had him last year though. With him on the team, I doubt we end up in the Play-in Game and I bet we make it at least to the 2nd weekend of the tournament.

                  Question-
there have been 15 weekly Newcomer of the Week Awards and likewise 15 weekly Player of the Week Awards..

how many freshmen have won either of them?

                  Answer--

Landry Shamet won one Newcomer Award (Jan. 9)

Darrel Brown, Jr. has won one Newcomer & one Player of the Week Award (tied with Aundrae Jackson)
The Newcomer/Player award that Darrell won were both in the same week, (Nov. 2

and NO OTHER freshman has won a single award.

Brown has led his team in scoring in 12 games, and leads his team in TWELVE statistical categories
Shamet has led his team in scoring in 9 games, and leads his team in FIVE statistical categories

I am probably as biased as Stickboy but I think we differ on which one is the more important freshman player to their team.

Anyone recall any previous Freshman of the Year who were not true freshmen? I suspect it might have happened before, but it is impossible to find all the past FOY results anywhere.

Interesting fact- no freshman has ever won the Player of the Year award in the MVC. Only 2 sophomores have ever won the award, and they have both been in the last 5 years- McDermott in 2012 and Van Vleet in 2014.

in the MVC Basketball Media guide are listed all the Freshmen of the Year
The list appears on page 232 and lists 31 winners from Bart Frederick in 1986 thru Markis McDuffie in 2016

I guess I hafta ask... whatever happened to Victor Williams? He chose to leave ISU after his freshman season? Did he simply pull a Nik Moore and go for the brighter lights?

As the season ends, looks like the All Freshman Team will be five of those top seven...
but Haldeman faded down the stretch...and clearly Hodgson, Kennell and Bar had more impact
so I know I am biased but I think BU should have four on the All Frosh Team

as far as the TOP NEWCOMERS..I think you can still keep Brown & Shamet in the mix, but you have to add Phil Fayne, Ryan Taylor, Alize Johnson and Aundrae Jackson...

I will predict there will not be 4 Bradley players on the All Freshman team. More likely 2, and maybe 3. Shamet and Brown are a locks, and I think Barnes will get votes. I think Bar and either Hodgson or Kennell will make it.

I will predict there will not be 4 Bradley players on the All Freshman team. More likely 2, and maybe 3. Shamet and Brown are a locks, and I think Barnes will get votes. I think Bar and either Hodgson or Kennell will make it.
I said I think Bradley's four freshman all deserve consideration but I also believe most every voter will be reluctant to give 3 or 4 spots to players on the same team -

I think that's what happened last year when Dixon (with 8.0 ppg, 2.3 rpg) got the 5th spot over one of our players who had 8.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg and another who had 8.2 ppg, 2.3 rpg.
