There are a lot of newcomers in the MVC this year - seems way more than most years...
Here's a list of all the freshmen in the MVC- 48 in total! (RS=redshirt freshman) - there are also a lot of new juco kids

Bradley- Koch Bar, Nate Kennell, Jayden Hodgson, Darrell Brown, Jr., Jerome Merritt, Lou Griffith
Drake- Johannes Dolven (RS), Nick Girardi, Will Halfon
Evansville- Dru Smith, Jaiveon Eaves, Jonathan Hall, Silas Adheke

Drake- vs. Concordia
Johannes Dolven (RS), did not play - possibly injred?
Nick Girardi DNP
Will Halfon DNP

Dolven is not injured. He just isn't good enough to break into the rotation.
Girardi and Halfon are walk-ons, so nothing is expected of them.

I expect the late loss of Dominik Olejniczak will really hurt this year- as they had no chance to recruit to replace him

I know you can't always tell from an exhibition - but I am surprised at how many freshmen played very well...
guys like Bar & Brown, Jr for Bradley, Williams, Gassman & Washington for ISU, Barnes & Kessinger for InSU, McCloud, Shamet..

Landry Shamet (RS) 12 pts, 3 rebs, 7 asst

Brett Barney (RS) 2.0 ppg, 0.8 rpg

I guess the ones that surprise me so far given the early hype - are Juwan McCloud, CJ Keyser, and Matt Chastain
McCloud has started every game and is one of the top freshmen in minutes played so far- but shooting just 19%
Keyser has as many turnovers as assists, made FG's, and made 3-pt FG's combined
Bradley has struggled, but a lot of our talent is still quite young and will improve - but what can you say for Drake? As bad as they are, they're a veteran team with virtually no help coming down the pipeline.

Right now, only 6 MVC freshmen are averaging 5ppg or more - and a look back showed that the Valley had TEN freshmen LAST YEAR who averaged 5 ppg or more

Matt Chastain tore his ACL in Loyola's Nov. 14 game against Eureka, and is out for the season.

Keyser missed the vast majority of the pre-season with multiple foot injuries. That put him behind. He's about the 12th man in rotation right now and basically only plays in mop up minutes with the walk-ons. He's shown his athletic ability, but is definitely a freshman. He doesn't have the same mindset that Shamet and Reaves have shown. I don't expect him to get too many critical minutes this year, but still will be good in the coming years.

Here's the current stats on the Valley's top freshmen

Darrell Brown, Jr. 15.3 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 2.7 apg
Landry Shamet (RS) (WSU) 8.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.4 apg
Koch Bar 7.9 ppg, 7.3 rpg
Jordan Barnes (Indiana State) 7.7 ppg, 3.2 rpg
Spencer Haldeman (RS) (UNI) 7.0 ppg, 3 rpg
Austin Reaves (WSU) 7.0 ppg, 2.6 rpg
Cameron Satterwhite (LU) 4.9 ppg, 2.3 rpg
Bruno Skokna (LU) 4.6 ppg, 1.8 rpg
Nate Kennell 4.5 ppg, 1 rpg
Dru Smith (Evansville) 3.7 ppg, 1.8 rpg
Jayden Hodgson 3.3 ppg, 1.4 apg
Juwan McCloud (UNI)3.2 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 2.0 apg

Updated....we have some optimism here...

Koch Bar 5.8 ppg, 5.5 rpg

Austin Reaves (WSU) 5.4 ppg, 2.3 rpg
Dru Smith (Evansville) 4.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg
Jayden Hodgson 4.6 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 1.5 apg, .364 3-pt shooting but .519 in MVC play (3rd best)

Juwan McCloud (UNI) 4.0 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 1.6 apg
Aaron Cook (SIU) 3.4 ppg, 1.0 rpg
Javeion Eaves (Evansville) 3.2 ppg, 2.0 rpg
Cameron Satterwhite (LU) 3.1 ppg, 1.3 rpg
Isaiah Brown (UNI) 2.4 ppg, 1.3 rpg

There are several others - including a couple 2nd year (redshirt) freshmen but their scoring averages are 2ppg or less.

I think the top 4 on the list have a spot on the MVC All-Freshman Team - and the spot is theirs to lose...
the 5th spot on the All Freshman team ought to go to one of the other 3 BU freshman who have all logged heavy minutes and a lot of responsibility even tho the Braves will not finish high in the standings.

Reaves is going to get a lot of consideration for that last spot. He's been extremely productive in limited minutes. The biggest thing that will hurt him is if he continues to miss games due to his shoulder. Extremely high Ortg, I believe leads the league in 3pt%, and consistently makes plays when he's in the game.

I agree, I had thought about Reaves, but the Shox are so deep that even in the games where he doesn't play, they barely miss him - so I wondered that might hurt his chances..

Plus his numbers are declining down the stretch..he's only made 4 baskets in the last SEVEN games...two of which he didn't play at all and two more he was scoreless
He has only 42 points & 24 rebounds total in their 11 MVC games.

I disagree with your first statement and agree with the second.

We missed him the last 2 games. He may not have put up numbers, but he makes plays and provides a spark. His energy is contagious when he comes in. I think you guys saw that in the game here at CKA.

But yes, his numbers have declined a bit. There is still time for him to turn it around. He missed the last two with an injury.

Juwan McCloud (UNI) 4.0 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 1.5 apg, .191 3-pt ahooting

left off those under 4.0 ppg

Gotta think the Freshman of the Year will be one of the top two guys, and that the All Freshman team will be five of the top 8 or 9 guys

I think BOTH Nate Kennell, and especially Jayden Hodgson served notice last night that their names ought to at least be in the conversation when it comes to FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
I know they won't get as broad of consideration as Shamet & Brown since both Kennell & Hodgson are coming on really strong down the stretch and a lot of the teams, coaches, MVC media have not seen then during this stretch that they have been playing so well and carrying the Braves to wins.

Anyway - here are the updated numbers for the prominent MVC freshmen:

Darrell Brown, Jr. 12.4 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.9 apg
Landry Shamet (RS) (WSU) 11.0 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 3.3 apg, .447 3-pt shooting but .507 in MVC play
Spencer Haldeman (RS) (UNI) 7.6 ppg (but 6.2 in MVC play and only 3.0 ppg since Feb. 1st), 2.2 rpg, .324 3-pt shooting
Jordan Barnes (Indiana State) 6.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg, .348 3-pt shooting
Koch Bar 5.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg
Nate Kennell 5.8 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 1.7 apg, .439 3-pt shooting (.478 in MVC play - 4th best)
Jayden Hodgson 5.3, 1.8 rpg, 1.9 apg, .417 3-pt shooting but .545 in MVC play (BY FAR the best in MVC play)

Dru Smith (Evansville) 5.4 ppg, 2.6 rpg, .282 3-pt shooting
Austin Reaves (WSU) 4.6 ppg (but only 15 points total over the last 10 games), 1.9 rpg
Donovan Franklin (InSU) 4.2 ppg, 1.5 rpg, .264 3-pt shooting
Juwan McCloud (UNI) 3.9 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 1.5 apg, .191 3-pt shooting

left off the rest under 4.0 ppg but I think we can drop the bottom 3 or 4 from contention...as their impact on their team and their team's wins has been considerably less than the rest

BTW- various preseason previews & writeups had named Shamet (LINK), McCloud (Lindy's Preseason Preview picked McCloud as Newcomer of the Year), and Jordan Barnes as their Preseason Freshman of the Year

The absolute worst preseason preview of all was this one, they missed just about everything by a mile.

Brown is great and a REALLY good building block for you guys going into the future. That said, Shamet will get votes for MVC POY, so I can't see anyone passing him up for FOY. He is one of the key leaders on the most dominant team in the league.
