His status on the ISU roster has been recently changed from "Junior" to "Senior"
The official 2024-25 Men's Basketball Roster for the Illinois State University Redbirds

He was listed last year as "Sophomore" - LINK...
ISU writer Jim Benson seems to confirm our observations--
he says Hawkins is a senior and this is his last season, so he must have fallen behind academically and lost the chance to regain his redshirted freshman year.

one other ISU note- their center Daouda N-Diaye has another stress fracture in his foot and in out indefinitely - one other mention said maybe 6-8 weeks.
He missed much of last season with a stress fracture of the foot as well.

        updated ISU preview

unfortunately some comments hint that this was written some time ago..and there's no mention of the personnel losses/suspensions &...

Looks like Muller is setting things up for Hawkins to play in ISU's first game this Friday at Murray State, just as predicted.

If he does, and I expect he will, he will not end up missing a single minute of play in any real game despite this being his second suspension, and this time involved a DUI, a citation for driving on a suspended license, and an open liquor carry violation.

This is a very bad look for the MVC ...

Hawkins already has 10 rebounds for ISU.

ISU ended up losing the game to Murray State 73-70. So Muller's phony "suspensions" did not end up helping him.

Deontae Hawkins was said to be "suspended" after his arrest for multiple charges, including DUI, driving on a suspended license, and transporting an open liquor container. Yet his faux "suspension" apparently was lifted before he missed a single game or practice, and he ended up playing a game-high 37 minutes in tonight's game. And the other sham-suspended player, D.J. Clayton, played 25 minutes, more than double the playing time than anyone else off the ISU bench, and way more than all the other reserves combined.
I am not surprised, as I did predict with precise accuracy that this suspension was a sham, and that Hawkins would start and play as usual. It would be expecting too much to see the sycophantic Pantagraph writers call him out on sham suspensions, and expect some real discipline for all the the lawbreakers on his roster and the numerous arrests and legal issues. Apparently, they need to rape a child before Muller actually enforces any discipline, and even then, as in the Bobby Hill case, he reluctantly acted only when there was an actual guilty plea.

it's become the trend that discipline is totally dependent on talent level..
Tyler Brown was one of their stars so even an aggressive battery arrest didn't cost him any time but Darious Clark who was arrested at the same time, in the same incident for the same charges was a goner.
Bryant Allen was arrested for simple possession and was a goner, and yet Brandon Sampay had a DUI and fake ID arrests yet played in every game
But then Iowa kinda has the same rules - their stud Peter Jok has had multiple DUIs and even served a jail sentence when caught again driving while his license was suspended and yet hasn't missed a minute of playing time.

some good news for Hawkins & ISU, they got the court date pushed back two months..time to rack up some playing time...
Javaka Thompson got two years added to his court supervision and owes almost $3K in fines - surprised Muller would still hold on to a walk-on that's only logged a single minute so far, esp. with two violations..

appearing in court again this week - ISU's Deontae Hawkins affirmed his desire to plead not guilty and was given a date for his pretrial hearing.
I know that lawyers do this just to push things back further and further, and in the end he will likely deal a plea for supervision, but ironically, the date set for his next court appearance is...

10am, Thursday March 2, 2017...right smack on the middle of the week of practices before the MVC Conference Tourney...
...and the day some teams begin play and most teams will be IN St. Louis.
betcha, the lawyers are working to get a little further continuance..

Yarbrough (Feb. 2) and Clayton (Jan. 31) each have their next court hearings in about two weeks

More trouble with the law in Normal...

Even while he's waiting for his court dates for his DUI
Deontae Hawkins gets caught again driving with a suspended license!!
(plus driving an uninsured vehicle!) Now he has additional court dates!

DJ Clayton's case was heard yesterday (underage consumption & theft/stolen merchandise), and with a guilty plea,
he was granted court supervision thru Jan. 31, 2019 plus 60 hours of public service & court costs.

Milik Yarbrough's court date for his similar Theft/Stolen property charge is tomorrow.

..two other players are also currently under supervision for their DUI's,
including one who has failed to appear for all his assigned court dates for the last 6 months

actually, wily, there are a couple guys on their roster who are not in the court database
compare that to a nearby MVC roster where nobody for two seasons is in the database

but the ISU people will look at that and say..
"but we're winning... " and that is the only thing that matters, I guess.....
