Looks like the Bloomington Pantagraph is finally starting to catch up on the story-
ISU's Clayton, Yarbrough charged with misdemeanor theft

Clayton, 20, was accused of using of concealing property valued at less than $500 that belonged to another person. Clayton was also charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Yarbrough, also 20, was charged with theft in connection with the same incident involving the iPhone. Yarbrough and Clayton were both released on $5,000 personal recognizance bonds and ordered to be back in court Nov. 1.

According to ISU Police Chief Aaron Woodruff, the charges relate to a report of a stolen phone in September by an ISU student. Investigators learned the phone was recently reactivated and were able to determine its general location.

Clayton took the phone and gave it to Yarbrough, according to the police chief. The victim’s wallet also was recovered, said police.

"We are aware of the situation and are handling it internally," said Redbirds coach Dan Muller.

These charges are related to a separate set of incidents from the Deontae Hawkins alcohol-related charges announced yesterday. Hawkins was arrested early Sunday morning and charged Monday with driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol and driving with a suspended license.

Apparently, ISU does not have an alcohol policy for their athletes, like most schools do, because these are just 2 more to add to the several other recent alcohol related violations, and nothing ever seems to change.
But interesting to note that ISU and Coach Muller have known about some of these latest developments for a while, and nothing was said until charges were made public yesterday and this morning and first reported here. No suspensions have been announced for Clayton and Yarbrough, and apparently, ISU intends to "handle it internally", which is ISU-speak for "sweep it under the rug".

BTW, this is the 3rd violation for Milik Yarbrough in the McLean County criminal database, as well as now 3 violations for Clayton, they have only been on campus for a few weeks. But both of them have a long way to go to match Deontae Hawkins, who appears in the McLean County criminal database 7 times, plus more in Ohio, where he is from!
And believe it or not, that is not even close to the record for numbers of entries in the database by ISU players the last couple years. There is one player who was only on the roster for 1 season who had 11 arrests/citations, including a second DUI while on probation from the first one. Yet ISU never made this public and he played in 30 games last season!

Here is a picture of the ISU administration, coaching staff, and fans discussing all their mounting player legal issues.

they're "handling it internally" since that has apparently always worked in the past

      Leadership=stepping up and taking responsibility
we learned a lot about lack of leadership the past few years in our Athletic Dept & AD

We haven't even touched on the ISU football players

For instance, last year, they had a star football player arrested on a felony charge of unlawful delivery of marijuana during the off-season.
He was suspended briefly, plead guilty, then was quickly reinstated months before the season began, and he never missed a single game. Of course, he was the team's leading rusher. Sounds like Dan Muller's system of discipline.

The Vidette calls for Coach Muller
"to take action" on all the recent arrests..

NOTE: That the original title to this column was...
"Muller needs to take action on troublemakers" - but then the title was changed to "Muller needs to take action on recent arrests "

Deontae Hawkins, DJ Clayton and Milik Yarbrough have all been charged on several criminal counts in McLean County Court over the past couple days.
Muller issued a short, one-sentence statement regarding the charges: “We are aware of the situation and are handling it internally.”
          Handling it internally. What??
It’s time for Muller to put his foot down and hold his players accountable.
Muller plans to handle these issues internally and get information out as he decides. But brisker and more strict decision making is needed
in order to show fans he has complete control of this team.

They choose an interesting photo to accompany the column

Good for the Vidette writers to demand some accountability. Too bad the wishy-washy butt-kissers at the Pantagraph don't have the cajones to demand the same. The Pantagraph sycophants have been helping ISU basketball and football coaches cover up the legal issues of their players for many years.
Note that numerous past ISU players have had DUI's, some multiple DUI's, that went unreported by the Pantagraph, and unrevealed and unpunished by ISU until the news broke on fan message boards, sometimes months after they happened!

Muller has only been there 4 years, yet he has set records for the numbers of kids getting arrested, cited, and suspended for violations.
Plus he has set records for the number of players he has dismissed (the list of dismissed players is too long to list here), yet the Pantagraph almost never bothers to look into it or report about it.

This all falls on Dan Muller, and their AD. Many of these players had similar criminal and legal issues before they came to ISU, and it was well known. That is why good players like Lofton, Clayton, Akoon-Purcell, and others were not recruited by other coaches and Muller was able to land them. Then combined with lax discipline, he is now dealing with all these problems. And, there is even more that isn't being reported.

yeah- during the recruitment period - when Akoon-Purcell (who was going by just Devaughn Purcell at that time) then got convicted of a violent felony in Florida - everyone else who was recruiting him dropped off ....
and so ISU had a lock on him. It wasn't a "recruiting coup" as some had claimed - it was a matter of ISU needing talent fast & badly enough to take the risks..

Ya gotta give Muller some credit - he' sticking to his word...
he said there'd be nothing more to say about all the arrests and they've stuck to that line..

well, at least I thought this was funny....

this column labels Illinois State as one team that's "POISED TO BREAK OUT"

...and given that they have had players in jail- their comment takes on a whole new meaning...

I notice the discussion on the ISU message boards has turned to attacking the MVC's other message boards for noticing all the arrests at ISU

To be fair, some of the most critical comments come from the ISU fans on their own board-

Comment >>Birds will play at Iowa on Sunday...maybe this was why we thought we were playing in Iowa City this year

Reply>>Change of venue. Moved to McLean Co Jail.

Milik Yarbrough - ...further hearing Nov. 1....
both were read their charges and the formalities then scheduled for separate further hearings in December. (neither date seems to conflict with their basketball schedule)

ISU plays an exhibition game Sunday against Quincy University.
Deonte Hawkins, who was suspended indefinitely after his arrest for DUI and other violations, will not play.

But D.J. Clayton, who was also suspended after his arrest on an underage drinking violation and possessing stolen goods, apparently has had his suspension lifted already without missing any games. He will play Sunday in the exhibition against Quincy.

This is exactly as I predicted...."handling it internally" = sham discipline. I predict Hawkins will be reinstated before their next game.

does it surprise anyone...they'd let them play even if wearing ankle monitors...

An interesting comment from one of the ISU Redbird fans on their message board about Deontae Hawkins

"I'm not sure what Hawkins is suspended from. He's been working with the team during morning workouts/practice.
So, is Muller telling the public that he is suspended to try and help some image restoration for the school? Who knows.
Sad stuff that this keeps happening ......."
