  • Squeaky Melchiorre

The PJ Star and Phil Luciano have a column worth reading today about Squeaky Melchiorre. I agree that it is time to forgive Melchiorre and retire his number. He was the greatest player of his time, and a #1 overall pick by the NBA, and he has lived an exemplary life since leaving Bradley.

For the record, I talked personally with new Bradley President Gary Roberts (a college acquaintance of mine) about this topic back in early July. He was familiar with it because a few other people had discussed it with him. Dr. Roberts conceded that the great majority of Bradley basketball fans and former players are in favor of retiring Squeaky's jersey. However, most Bradley grads and donors are not basketball fans, and they do not strongly support it. Plus, the majority of the faculty are opposed. So he told me he does not intend to raise this issue in the forseeable future.

Why doesn't BU honor Melchiorre with a photo/plaque/display in Renaissance Arena? I understand why many aren't thrilled with a retired jersey hanging in the rafters.... There has to be some price for poor choices, similar to Rose not being in the MLB Hall of Fame.

Perhaps supportive fans/alumni could create a Melchiorre scholarship, to remember his MBB skills and community contributions post basketball....
Use his life as a learning opportunity for BU students/athletes about choices in one's life and the repercussions..
