We are now in February, which means we are in the home stretch of another exciting season. As I like to do at this time of the year in this notebook, it’s time to look at some of the top freshmen in the St. Louis metro area. There are several youngsters who are making an […]

Matt O'Harver photo Hillsboro's Gaven Pinkley is averaging almost 14 points and more than seven rebounds per game, trailing only senior Sam Brewer (averaging 18.8 points, 9.5 rebounds) for team leadership in both categories. He also has blocked 50 shots in 17 games, an average of nearly three per game. By Gordon Bess Freshman forward Gaven Pinkley tossed in 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to spark Hillsboro to a 54-43 victory over Fox on Wednesday (Jan. 21) at Fox. It was the second consecutive win for Hillsboro (8-9) and the fourth straight loss for Class 5 Fox (5-9), with all four losses coming against Class 4 schools (including Windsor, Affton and Festus). The Hawks nailed eight of their first nine shots in the game to zoom out to 22-9 lead late in the first quarter. But Antonio Quick’s 3-point basket got the Fox offense out of the doldrums and the Warriors cut their deficit to 29-22 at halftime. Hillsboro leaned on its defense in the second half and especially in the fourth quarter when it held Fox to six points. Pinkley kept Fox at bay with three field goals in the third quarter and then the Hawks put the game away in the closing minutes, sinking eight of 14 free throws in the final quarter. Quick and Austin Laslo led the Warriors with nine points apiece while Sam Bekemeier and Shamar Smith each had six points. Hillsboro doesn’t play again until Monday, Jan. 26 in the first round of the Union Tournament, where the Hawks are the No. 5 seed and will play No. 4 Lutheran South (8-5). Fox travels to Mehlville (6-9) Friday in the Suburban West Conference opener for the Warriors. http://www.myleaderpaper.com/sports/article_f035f4a8-a281-11e4-b40e-fbe2c7cd84c5.html
