Scott Sutton was the first candidate to be offered the Bradley job back in 2011, with a big raise over what he earned at ORU. But he wanted to hire his brother (Sean Sutton- who was an assistant at ORU) as an assistant, and he wanted to hire his dad, Eddie Sutton, in a non-coaching consultant position. Our President refused to allow him to hire them, so he literally got up and walked away from the meeting. The next 7 or 8 candidates Bradley reached out to also turned us down.
If you think that is all strange, the story about how we ended up hiring Geno is even more unique.
I am surprised ORU fired Scott Sutton. He had 14 winning seasons in a row there from 2001-2015, then he went 14-17 and 8-22 the last two seasons. His record in 18 seasons after taking over for Barry Hinson in 1999 is pretty good- 575-328. He has turned down a bunch of better offers to stay at ORU, and then he gets fired after one bad season (and one mediocre season). And their decline these last 2 years was partly related to their horrible decision to leave the Summit and join the terrible Southland Conference. They stayed only 2 years, then begged their way back into the Summit, but those 2 years in the Southland hurt Sutton's recruiting and helped lead to their decline.

New Mexico is reportedly close to hiring New Mexico State's head coach Paul Weir. Weir has only been head coach at NMSU for one year, after 9 seasons as an assistant there under Marvin Menzies (now at UNLV). They went 28-6 this past season, went to the NCAA Tournament, and lost in the first round.

Chris Jans, who was just named as an associate head coach at Wichita State is now reported to be one of the finalists for the head coach job at New Mexico State. The other finalists, who were all on campus this weekend for interviews, are: NMSU assistant Jesse Bopp, Oregon assistant coach Tony Stubblefield, TCU assistant coach Ryan Miller, and UCLA assistant David Grace. Their AD, Mario Moccia, who was previously at A at SIU, will make a decision in the next couple days.
The fact that Chris Jans is being considered for another head coaching job this quickly shows that college AD's have a short memory. He was hired by Bowling Green as their head coach 3 years ago, and 1 year later in April, 2015, he was fired when a video surfaced showing him at a bar intoxicated and making advances toward a couple women, including slapping them on the butt. He then became abusive toward another female bar patron who tried telling him that he was embarrassing himself and the BGSU program by being "sloppy drunk" and for hitting-on other women while being a married man. He then called her a bitch. After an extended investigation, Bowling Green fired him for cause and refused to pay him for the remaining 5 years on his contract.
