  • NBA free agency

NBA free agency begins today, and judging from the deals announced so far, it should be really interesting, as many of the top market teams appear to be spending wildly to try to rebuild their teams into winners.

Here are a couple of the more astounding free agent deals report to be happening today-
The New York Knicks will reportedly sign former Bulls center Joakim Noah, who is clearly on the downside of his career, and is injury prone (played in only 29 games last season) for 4 years and $70 million! He averaged just 4.3 ppg last year, and 8.8 rpg (his lowest rebound average since he became a regular starter for the Bulls)

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly set to sign Clevland Cavs center Timofy Mosgov for 4 years, $64 million. He only played a total of 79 minutes for the Cavs in the entire 2016 playoffs, as new coach Tyrone Lue decided to go mostly with a smaller lineup. He averaged 6.3 ppg and just 4.4 rpg, which is awful for a center in the NBA. His career averages are 6.9 ppg and 5.0 rpg. He also averaged just 0.4 assists per game last year (0.5 apg for his career), which is astoundingly low, considering he played with LeBron James.
How the Lakers can think this guy is worth $16 million per year is mind-boggling.

Mediocre point guard Jeremy Lin was just signed by the NJ Nets for 3 years, $36 million. Good for him if he can get $12 million per year, but IMO, there are at least 30 point guards better than him. He only averaged 3.0 assists per game last season with Charlotte, and he is a below average shooter.

The Miami Heat will re-sign center Hassan Whiteside for $98 million for 4 years. Another huge contract for a player who was in the D-League prior to this past season, and was making the NBA minimum before this. But he did have a really good season for Miami averaging 14.2 ppg and 11.8 rpg.

Another former D-League player 6'5" wing Kent Bazemore is reportedly being offered a contract by the Houston Rockets around $18-$20 million per year. He averaged 11.6 ppg for the Atlanta Hawks last season.

Jordan Clarkson, a 2nd round pick 2 years ago by the Wizards, was re-signed by the Lakers for $50 million for 4 years.

Andre Drummond re-signed with the Detroit Pistons for a reported $130 million over 5 years. He is a good player, but is one of the worst free throw shooters in the history of the NBA.

DeMar DeRozan signed with the Toronto Raptors for $139 million for 5 years!

Chandler Parsons, whose career has been riddle with injuries, was offered $94.8 million over 4 years! $23.7 million per year for an injury prone small forward who averaged 13.7 ppg last year! He has not signed yet and has meetings with other teams pending.

Bradley Beal will reportedly re-sign with the Washington Wizards for $130 million for 5 years.

And some of the biggest free agents like Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Harrison Barnes, Dirk Nowitzke, Evan Turner, etc. have yet to sign...

    Free agent tracker-

One addition- Mike Conley just agreed to re-sign with Memphis for 5 years, $153 million, which is the largest free agent contract in the history of the NBA. Quite an accomplishment for a guy who has never even made a single NBA All Star team!
This record might be broken soon by a couple of the remaining free agents like Kevin Durant and LeBron James.

The Bulls are reported to be looking for bargain-basement free agents. They were reported to be interested in re-signing E'Twaun Moore, a guy they signed a couple seasons ago for near NBA-minimum salary to be a backup for Derrick Rose, but the market for even a marginal guard like Moore is now reported to be over $20 million for 3 years.

Now the reports are that the Bulls may be interested in Moe Harkless, Allen Crabbe, Solomon Hill, and/or Aaron Afflalo, and giving Jerian Grant, one of the players they got for Derrick Rose, a chance at point guard.
Today the Bulls were reported to be talking to Rajon Rondo.
Arron Afflalo could wind up wearing a Chicago Bulls uniform next season. With NBA free agency underway, teams are positioning themselves for a run at this year’s class of players. As is the case in your typical offseason, the top free agents control the fate and destinations of the players below them. That is unless […]

More evidence of the insanity among NBA executives- The New Orleans Pelicans have reportedly reached agreement with E'Twaun Moore on a 4 year, $34 million contract (average- $8.5 million per year).

His earnings in his previous 4 years combined were less than half what he will make each of the next 4 years

Also tonight- Kent Bazemore just reached agreement with the Atlanta Hawks on a 4 year, $70 million contract.
$17.5 million per year for a journeyman player who was not drafted, spent much of his first 2 seasons in the D-League, and has a career scoring average of 6.4 ppg while playing for 3 teams in 4 years. He will now be making almost $6 million dollars more next year than Stephen Curry

Milwaukee just threw $30 million at superstar Mirza Teletovic and signed him for 3 years

a 6-9 big man who averaged 12 ppg/3.8 rpg, and virtually no assists
He ranks 160-170th in the NBA in most of those statistics

and recall - no matter how good you might think he is- the Suns only won 23 games, 26th best in NBA

Hey guys just remember that these teams must spend around $90 million in salaries or they get fined. Actually what they don't spend goes into a player pool and, essentially, produces bonuses for the players on that team.
So now we can easily see why they are giving these kind of contracts. Last year only 7 teams met the salary level.

You are right. The teams have a salary cap, but also a salary minimum that they must spend, and the revenues from TV and other sources have risen sharply the last couple years, pushing the salary cap & minimum higher.

But it still fun to look at some of these ridiculous salaries being handed out and make comparisons.
Here is the latest signing- Aaron Afflalo just signed a $25 million/2 year contract with the Sacramento Kings.
So 31 year-old journeyman Aaron Afflalo, who has never made an All Star team, will make an average of $12.5 million per year over the next 2 years, while former MVP and World Champ Stephen Curry will still making less than that next season.

big salaries don't surprise me but it's WHO they are throwing the big salaries at. If they waste all their $$ on backups then they won't have a prayer of luring any decent free agents & will have to play a team full of subs.

Here is one more NBA free agent signing that is perhaps of interest to MVC fans.
Former Creighton Bluejay Anthony Tolliver cashed in on the wild free agent spending trend today. He was signed to a 2-year contract for $16 million by the Sacramento Kings.

Tolliver will earn $8 million per year, and last season he averaged 5.3 points and 3.2 rebounds for Detroit.
Sacramento will be his 9th team in 9 seasons in the NBA. Good for him, but is that what 31 year old guys who only average 5.3 ppg/3.2 rpg are worth now in the NBA (his career averages are just 6.0ppg/3.5rpg)?

I fully agree but these teams are spending like this just to get to the minimum. I heard the other day that only 7 teams met the minimum last year. Next year (2017) gets even more interesting because the minimum, if I heard right, becomes $110 million. That is why so many super stars are only signing one year contracts this year.
This should be real good for Livingston next season, as he has helped himself as SC's backup.

                        Another mind-boggling contract offer-
6'4" shooting guard Tyler Johnson is a restricted free agent. He was not drafted out of Fresno State. He has played parts of 2 seasons in the NBA, appeared in a total of 68 games, and averaged 7.4 ppg over 2 seasons with the Miami Heat. He was just offered a 4 year/$50 million offer sheet by the Brooklyn Nets.

So if he signs, Tyler Johnson will average $12.5 million over the next 4 seasons, and thus he will also be making more than Stephen Curry.

The Nets offer sheet is heavily backloaded, and breaks down like this:
                        $5,628,000 in 2016-17, $5,881,260 in 2017-18, $18,858,765 in 2018-19, and $19,631,975 in 2019-20 = $50,000,000 total guaranteed.

Looks like Dwyane Wade is going to sign with the Bulls. He has agreed to sign a 2 year contract. The Bulls need to make a couple quick trades to free up salary to get enough salary cap space to do Wade's deal. They are trying to trade Mike Dunleavy (probably to the Cavaliers) and Jose Calderon (probably to the Lakers).

Dwyane Wade has spent 13 seasons in the NBA, all 13 with the Miami heat. He has always worn the #3, but it is currently worn on the Bulls by Doug McDermott. Likely McDermott will give up #3 and switch to another number.

I don't understand the last two, Wade and Rondo,. They both signed/will sign two year contracts. I understand that Rondo's second year is only partially guaranteed.

However, I think Chicago's best strategy would have been to tank for a high draft choice next year.

what? Spend all that $ to get DWade, Rondo, Lopez, and team them with Jimmy Butler and whoever else we can get to fill out the rotation...
This is not a team that will finish in the bottom half..

                              Rondo's stats - 12 ppg, 12 assists, 2 stl, 37% from the arc in 72 games--
are not a big dropoff from what we got with DRose- 16 ppg, 5 asst, 0.7 stl, 29% from the arc in 50-60 games/yr
