Yesterday, Cooper committed to Washington State University of the Pac 12.

I found this preview of the Tyler Junior College team this year that mentions Davante Cooper.
And the only other mention anywhere about Davante Cooper committing to Washington State comes from the short thread on the Washington State University basketball message board-
Interesting that the poster seemed to get information that Davante already played a season at Tyler, and averages a whopping 18.4 points per game, 11.3 rebounds per game, and 2.7 blocks per game.
I am pretty sure Davante didn't average those numbers in high school, and his Bradley numbers were 1.7 ppg, 1.3 rpg, and 0.3 bpg. So, I'd sure like to know where those numbers came from.Comment

I hope he has a great career but....
that article seems to suggest the only reason Davante's numbers at Bradley were so bad ( 1.7 points and 1.3 rebounds i)
..was that he "lacks experience" and just "needs time to develop" because "he's raw"...
BUT...Davante is already more than three years out of high school...he's just a few weeks from being 22 years old...he will likely be 2, 3, even 4 years older than all the players he faces this year or even next...
If you're this many years into your post-high school career then I think the statute of limitations on the use of "inexperienced" and "raw" has come & gone.Comment

I've got to agree that this is really strange. But there are other links on the internet that confirm he has been a highly sought after commodity-
When I saw Cooper play a few early games for BU I predicted he'd end up being one of our best players before he graduated. Then, he seemed to fall out of favor and looked lost most of the year. His size and skills were promising, and I hope he does well at Tyler JC and at Washington State.
From what I have heard from multiple sources, his departure had nothing to do with his skill levels and potential, and mostly to do with him "not fitting in" with Coach Wardle's coaching, practice expectations, and with other expectations the coaches had.
Recall that Coach Wardle has always put an extremely high priority on his players athletic and academic development.Comment

This can't possibly be the same Davante Cooper we had last year, right? Aside from games, I got to watch him play in practice a couple times and I would argue he had the lowest ceiling of any member of last year's team, maybe aside from Okafor. He demonstrated little to no growth or progression throughout the year, and I don't think I heard anybody express regret when they heard he was transferring.Originally posted by Da Coach View Post

That was pretty much my impression when I saw this news of him committing to a big-time program like Washington State, and with offers supposedly from Oklahoma State, Purdue, and Oregon State.
We'll have to wait to see how this develops, but I have always said that college coaches lose objectivity often when it comes to offering big guys (just look at Tom Crean's past history of recruiting inept big men). But even if a player can develop his skills, if he doesn't change his work habits and coachability, it is still going to drive his coaches crazy.Comment

Davante's first game stats are now posted (his team, Tyler junior college played Brookhaven - a very low level DIII junior college- non-scholarship players)
he started, was 1-4 from the floor and 0-1 from 3-pt, 2 pts, 10 rebounds, 0 asst, 2 turnovers, and 1 block
Two other players also got double-digit rebounds in the game as there were a lot of missed shots, and two of Davante's teammates scored over 20 pts
in other NJCAA games, there are a couple nearby kids showing up in the national stat rankings...

5 games into the season, and playing some really soft early season opponents like Lonestar College-Tomball (a school that doesn't even have a basketball team but they do have a "Club Team" that Tyler clobbered by 30)
..Davante's averages are 4.3 ppg, 8.8 rpg. I think Washington State is gonna be a challenge next year for Davante.Comment
