  • Barry Hinson to New Mexico State?

New mexico State's head basketball coach Marvin Menzies just left to take the spot at UNLV..so they are hiring..

their AD is Mario Moccia - who was formerly the SIU AD and the guy who hired Barry Hinson there...

Now there's talk that Barry is one of the top candidates for the NMSU job
...heck, he was the MVC Coach of the Year - which certainly guarantees he gonna be a success at NMSU according to some experts

They would have to offer me a lot of money to leave SIU-C for New Mexico State. Unless their athletic director and president have definite insight into their future conference affiliation, and that it would be an improvement, plus a lot more money, there is no way I'd take the job. I would be surprised if he took it.

I was checking out the Sauliki message board and it looked like a good amount of them wouldn't mind seeing Hinson getting a new job.
If you cant go to school go to STATE!!

Hinson may still be a candidate, but no further word..
nowadays you just never know - coaches leave unexpectedly....

Here are some details of Barry Hinson's current contract deal with SIU...per published sources..

Base Salary: $300,000/yr up thru March 31, 2015, then ... salary increased to $325,000/yr on April 1, 2015
..in addition, he could earn a $15,000 bonus if the team has a combined GPA of 2.6 or better for the whole school year.
He gets an additional $5,000 if it has a combined 2.8 GPA or greater.
The team had a 2.607 GPA in the fall of 2014-15.
Hinson's contract also provides a membership at the Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The term of the original contract went through March of 2017, but after he won the Coach of the Year Award in 2015-16, he received a one-year extension through March 31, 2018.
If he leaves early, he is responsible for a buyout of $175,000 for each year left unfulfilled - so if he left now he'd owe a buyout of $350,000 - possibly one reason he is NOT likely to leave even if he is offered the New Mexico State job, as that job currently pays $390,000 not likely a big enough difference to take on the responsibility of paying the buyout unless it gets negotiated away...
