  • Bad news for Drake

Drake just sent out a press release announcing that freshman center Dominik Olejniczak, who played well, and became a starter in the last month of the season, has decided to leave Drake and was granted his release.
He played in 30 games, started 8 games, and averaged 6.5 ppg, and 4.1 rpg, and he shot 72.2% from the floor. he averaged 10.3 ppg over his last 9 games when he got more playing time.
He apparently is looking to transfer to another school.

does not surprise me...I was very impressed with him in the two games we played them..
he has a solid pro-like body and was effective around the hoop....and I really thought that Drake/Giacoletti was kinda negligent in not going to the guy more...

Look at what the guy started doing late in the season when Giacoletti "discovered" the guy sitting on the far end of the bench...
-he became a starter and started the last 8 games...
-in those last 8 games, he averaged 12ppg/5rebs
-in that same 8 game interval at the end of the season he made 40-53 shot attempts!!! (75.5%!!!)
That means you HAVE TO GET THE GUY THE BALL MORE OFTEN!!!!

Like I said, I am sure the guy & his "people" started getting calls at the end of the season and Dominik realized he's stuck in a guard oriented offense...
This is strange since surely Giacoletti knows the value of a dominant big man (Andrew Bogut)

Prior to those last 8 games, Olejniczak was barely playing 10 minutes per game - he will end up at a Big Ten school or other big school - just statistically Iowa State gets about half these guys

there are reports that Drake's Dominik Olejniczak will decide between Cal, Colorado & Ole Miss...
too bad - he would have been a great midmajor player but will be an Ibby Djimde or a Marcus Arnold at a BCS school.

Gotta wonder that Drake & Ray Giacoletti made a huge mistake by not playing the kid much...what were they saving him for?
Had he gotten enough playing time to make him happy - who knows - he might have stayed at Drake.
The whole first half of the season the kid was playing 3-5 minutes or less! Hardly blame the kid for listening to "handlers" who were telling him that a talented 7-footer would play a whole lot more somewhere else.
Once he started playing decent minutes, 18 pt/8 rebound games were commonplace.

If you're not going to get many minutes, it might as well be at Pac 12 or SEC school.

Drake transfer Dominik Olejniczak chose Ole Miss, then almost immediately they are in trouble and may get hit hard by sanctions...right now it's only FB but who knows...
