I don't know if the number of upsets this year is some kind of record for the first round, but there have been many of them. Over 40% of the First Round games (13 of 32 games) have been won by the lower seed.
The NCAA actually defines an upset when a team seeded 5 or more spots lower wins.
But here is a list of all the lower seeds that have won in the 32 First Round games Thursday and Friday-
#15 Middle Tennessee St. over #2 Michigan St. 90-81
#14 Stephen F. Austin over #3 West Virginia 70-56
#13 Hawaii over #4 California 77-66
#12 Yale over #5 Baylor 79-75
#12 Arkansas Little Rock over #5 Purdue 85-83
#11 Wichita State over #6 Arizona 65-55
#11 Gonzaga over #6 Seton Hall 68-52
#11 Northern Iowa over #6 Texas 75-72
#10 Syracuse over #7 Dayton 70-51
#10 VCU over #7 Oregon State 75-67
#9 Butler over #8 Texas Tech 71-61

And though many people are saying the Middle Tennessee win over Michigan State is the biggest upset in the history of the NCAA Tournament, a statistical analysis shows it was actually the 3rd biggest upset-
