Yes, Dick considered it the highest insult, and it essentially was a termination notice (firing). That is why he actively sought another job after that was what Pres. Martin Abegg offered him.

I would say Chico it was more of a mutual agreement between Dick and the University. Dick was and still is a friend of mine. There is no question that the female investigator from the NCAA was extremly abrasive over petty allegations. Dick is a fine person and so is Ron Ferguson, the Athletic Director at the time. Dick did have aspirations to be an NBA coach and was very good friends with Chuck Daley. I would say with great confidence, Dick being able to take a job with Chuck Daley, worked out very nicely for all parties involved at the time.

I would agree with you. We haven't been the same, but neither is college basketball or many of the NCAA rules. It would have been much harder for Dick to recruit the same players he did then and many of them would not have qualified academically due to changes in NCAA guidelines. For example there was no NCAA Proposition 48, that required high school students to maintain a certain grade point average, to be eligible to play at the collegiate level. Without getting into names, many of the players recruited at the time would not qualify now. This applies not only to Bradley but to other schools. That shrinks the talent pool dramatically. Also, junior college players could transfer without a degree. Now junior college players must have an associate degree before transferring. These are just a couple of the rule changes that have changed college basketball.

That is my opinion also. Others may say it was mutual agreement, but it would still be a termination notice.

It clearly was. Abegg offered him 1 more year in 1986, but told him to start looking for another job because he would not be extended beyond that one year only. He needed Bradley's approval to seek another job, and was told to do so by Abegg.

The reason I cited those old Chicago Trib articles was that I just wanted to clarify a couple points that repeatedly get misstated...

-Dick was NOT fired, he left on his own although the situation was as described - in the end, he did way better for himself, becasme a multi-millionaire and NBA Exec, and Bradley has never been the same since.

-It was NEVER proven that Dick lied to the NCAA. Nobody knows exactly what was said and we know Dick chose not to be as cooperative as the NCAA woman investigator demanded he be, but in the end he was cited for "failure to deport himelf" in the manner NCAA expected and not cooperating - he was not cited for lying or dishonesty.
If people want to choose to believe that he lied, then that's their right but to claim he was proven to have lied is in itself a big lie.

Those who know the facts understand that Dick simply pissed off the NCAA investigator by not giving the pushy, arrogant woman the answers she wanted, so she then alleged unethical behavior without ever really giving a single example of a single lie or dishonest thing said.
Remember - the worst of all the violations was paying for phone calls and some transportation and trying to find the dad a job (which never happened). Grand total of about $200 in extra benefits - if indeed it was true (some doubt still exists since 99% of all the basis for those charges came from an immature, disgruntled and bitter ex-BU player who was clearly on a vendetta to get back at Bradley) - and as Chuck Daly said - at least 90% of all DI schools were currently doing far worse but Bradley was just coming off a 32 win season and some in the NCAA simply weren't gonna allow that to happen.

It doesn't pay to be arrogant and cocky when others determine your fate

After a brief jump up to the #9 position in Conference RPI, the MVC has now dropped back to the #11 position-
2016-2017 Men's College Basketball Conference RPI (Rating Percentage Index) - a ranking of conference based on the average RPI of the teams in the conference, plus non-conference wins and losses, the best teams and automatic bids from the conferences.

There are a few upcoming games this weekend where the MVC could gain in RPI-
UTA (RPI 20) at Bradley Fri. 12/16
Oklahoma State (RPI 63) at Wichita State- Sat. 12/17
Drake at Iowa State (RPI 93)- Sat. 12/17
Indiana State at Valparaiso (RPI 36)- Sat. 12/17
St. Joseph's (RPI 56) at Illinois State- Sun. 12/18

Wow, the only successful coach to be supposedly arrogant and cocky. The 10,000 fans in the seats didn't give a darn. Guess you just didn't like Coach Versace.

How Far Has the MVC Fallen?

Having been close to Dick V. and Fergie when the NCAA flap occurred, IMO this really happened because the Bradley President at the time did not like Dick at all, was absolutely afraid of any controversy, and was not a real supporter of Bradley Basketball. He simply served Dick up on a platter to the NCAA and did nothing to support Dick which allowed the NCAA to move ahead unimpeded. Because of the public clamor over the situation he allowed Dick to stay on for a short time and then "resign". In my many years as a Chiefs Club (Now the Braves Club) Officer and board member, the President only met very briefly with us twice, both times to admonish us to not cheat in recruiting. He never thanked us even once for our work or for the many things we did in support of the University and its Athletic programs.

I'd say at least half and maybe closer to 3/4 of all successful college coaches have a mean, cocky, arrogant, and intensely competitive component to their personalities.
Gene Keady, Gregg Marshall (who also broke NCAA recruiting rules in order to land a kid he wanted - the New York Times once referred to Wichita State as "the most heavily penalized school in National Collegiate Athletic Association history"), Frank Martin, Coach K, Thad Matta, Bob Knight, and plenty more...

Going back to the topic. The Valley use to be a major conference. it is now a mid-major. The reason reason for the demise is football. When the league was a major it consisted of Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis State, Bradley, St.Louis, Drake, Wichita Stae, Tulsa and North Texas State. Louisville, Cincinatti, Memphis, Tulsa and North Texas all left to improve their football. Wichita dropped it after a tragic plane accident. St. Louis left to improve their basketball and marketing. Wichita is now looking to leave and possibly starting football again. I don't know if it means anything, but the schools that play no football, Bradley, Evansville and Loyola are consistently at the bottom of the conference. Drake that plays at a very low level of football is also mired at the bottom of the league. Meanwhile it seems the schools that play in the FCS, UNI, ISU-red, ISU-blue, SIU and MSU are for the most part the middle to upper part of the standings in most team sports.

Yes - and the chasm in between the BCS powers and midmajors will grow wider with the big schools paying players more, able to spend millions to land the best coaches (and players) and the track record of putting more kids into the pros

the day will come when midmajor wins like UNI over UNC and InSU over Butler are pretty scarce.
