  • Green Bay's play-by-play broadcaster ejected

The play-by-play guy from Green Bay, Matt Menzl who is very well known to Coach Wardle, who was doing last night's Valpo-GB game
was ejected by one of the referees who finally got his fill of the gestures & barking from the courtside table.

Based on what I have heard here I have to side with the Broadcaster. The job of the official is to make sure the players on the basketball floor follow the rules of the game. They are not responsible for the actions of people in any other areas of the building unless it threatens their ability to carry out their duties on the court. I do not feel the ref was threatened by the broadcaster. I think the Refs sometimes feel their power allows them to exert their authority in other areas. They need to keep their responsibilities in perspective and not overreach

I think the refs take enough crap, and that they are well within their rights to do as they please to control behavior they find objectionable coming from the courtside.
If the guy is up away from the court like where Dave Snell sits for BU home games, then fine - let him scream all he wants...

BUT anyone sitting at the scorer's table at courtside IS EXPECTED to abide by rules and common behavior standards...

Even if someone at that scorer's table applauds, cheers, or certainly if they boo, shout at players or referees, and most certainly if the harass the refs or use derogatory language - then it doesn't matter WHO THEY ARE, and it has nothing to do with freedom of speech or freedom of the press - if they violate common behavior standards then they must leave their courtside position.
I have even seen a junior high referee stop and warn a scorebook-keeper when he simply applauded the play of one of the players. Everyone at that table is supposed to do their job and nothing more. The convention is - if they want to become fans and have the freedom to complain or scream, then go sit in the stands.

            more to this story.

Green Bay upset Valparaiso 99-92 in overtime in a wild Horizon League semifinal on Monday night.  Valpo had tied the game at the end of regulation on a full court hail mary inbounds heave, but the Phoenix were able to rebound and emerge victorious in an extra frame. What happened on the court was only a Read more...

I don't care how bad the officiating is, it is a total lack of class for a broadcaster to act in that manor. Dave Snell would never be in that position.
