Florida Gulf Coast men won the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament to get the automatic bid to the NCAA. Congratulations to Ken Kavanagh! All he's done since being run off by our previous administration, is take over a terribly weak, new Division I program in 2009, and build them into a Sweet 16 team less than 4 years later (in 2013). And now with a completely new team and new coach, they have done it again in 2016.

And just to prove it was not a fluke, the Florida Gulf Coast women's basketball team just finished their season with an undefeated 14-0 Atlantic Sun Conference record (27-4 overall), and they are the #1 seed in the A-Sun Conference Tournament again. This is nothing new for the FGCU women, who finished 14-0 last year, too, and 31-3 overall. They have had undefeated conference seasons 4 of the last 5 years! In fact, they have won their conference 6 years straight since Ken Kavanagh took over as their AD. In those 6 years (with likely several more games left to play this season), they are a combined 98-4 in conference play, and 168-29 overall.

FGCU has also become a power in many other sports as well under Ken Kavanagh. Meanwhile, does anyone want to know the records of Bradley's sports programs since he left? The records are real ugly.

UNC-Asheville won their conference tournament yesterday playing Winthrop. A guy by the name of Jimmy Gavin scored 31 for Winthrop..He is the guy Geno did not hardly play when he was at Bradley. Shows you the eye for talent he had.

from what i understand FGCU is a very popular school with an amazing campus near the beach. Its seen explosive enrollment over the past 8 years. I remember when they played at Carver Arena against BU, they were scrubs. However, their recruiting got on track quick and they exploded onto the scene in 13'. Pretty amazing tale, and it looks like it has become a great place to recruit too. I imagine FGCU may end up in a more prestigous conference before too long!

they don't have football or a football stadium, which hurts chances of moving up but they are in the exploratory phase and might have football soon and are already banking donations to build a stadium..

yes, congrats...but.....
this was almost an amazingly bizarre scenario....
Because the team FGCU beat in the finals of the A-Sun Tourney was Stetson...BUT...
But Stetson is ineligible by virtue of academic shortcomings (inadequate APR)
Thus - had FGCU lost the Stetson - it would have created the tremendously EMBARRASSING situation where NEITHER the winner nor the loser of their Championship game went to the NCAA.
It would then be the winner of the regular season ...which was North Florida - who got whalloped in the tourney by 33 points by FGCU!

In the future- the A-Sun must NOT allow ineligible teams to participate in their conference tourney!!!

UAB was getting VOTES in the TOP 25 but they are RPI 81 and lost in the quarterfinals of CUSA -
nevertheless, gurus still say they ought to get an at-large bid ?? People even basing their silly argument on an upset they pulled in LAST YEAR'S NCAA Tourney!!

UConn and Michigan are 2 more teams that now may have secured an at large bid with big wins today. Hard to know if Wichita State's chances will be affected, but they have to be hoping for no more upsets.

Watched 'Pardon the Interruption' on ESPN today. Jay Billas was on and said he thought the committee should choose its field before conference tourneys start. His reasoning was that the major conferences get a chance to polish there resumes, as Michigan has, while the mid major bubble teams can only be hurt by losing. He pointed out that even when they win a game their rpi goes down. So in his mind they should pick the tourney, and replace the teams at the bottom with conference tournament winners and it would be a lot fairer to mid majors.

Thought it was an interesting point, but probably impractical.

There will be no Illinois teams in the NCAA tournament for the 3rd straight year, and 6 of the last 9 years (since 2007).

Illinois made it in 2013, 2011, 2009, 2007, and 2006. No other Illinois team has made it in that time frame since SIU in 2007 and 2006, and Bradley in 2006.

ISU last made the NCAA in 1998, Loyola in 1985, WIU in 1981, EIU in 2001, NIU in 1996, UIC in 2004, and DePaul in 2004.
Northwestern, Chicago State, and SIUE have never made the NCAA Division I tournament.
