  • MVC semifinals

Should be 2 pretty good games today. Wichita vs UNI and Evansville vs ISU Blue. I would expect Wichita and Evansville to win but UNI not afraid of the Shockers and the Sycamores gives Evansville fits. Should be a fun day.

Very frustrating that the semifinals are on CBS Sports Network, a prime channel that cuts so many fans out. I'm sure it was financially good for the MVC, but it stinks for the fans.

I'd go to a sports bar, but I feel like crud today. Either way, our tournament semifinals should be able to be seen by fans.

UNI hung in their and trails 29-23. Wichita got it up to an 11 point lead but could never extend it. UNI not doing anything inside.

Under a minute left in overtime. The teams tied 47-47 after regulation.
UNI just took a 55-52 lead on a 3-pointer by Jeremy Morgan. UNI playing great defense, and Wichita State not looking real good.

Final score- UNI 57 WSU 52

Wichita State finishes 24-8 with an RPI that will drop into the 40's. They are 1-4 against teams in the top 50 RPI, and their only quality win was way back on Dec. 12 against Utah.

Will WSU get an at large bid? They have to be praying there are no upsets in conference tournaments, because they are clearly on the back side of the bubble.

Even before this loss, CBSSports' Jerry Palm had them as a #11 seed, meaning they would not likely be in if not for being presumed to get the autobid.

if it were left to the hopeful gurus, then they are in because everyone likes Fred

Wes Washpun was the difference for UNI. Had 20 and pretty much kept Fred Van Fleet in check. Not shocked by this outcome. As average as most teams have been outside the top 25 I would think Wichita will make the tournament.

doesn't matter to me either way - the more teams the MVC has the better...but if it was a team coached by Barry Hinson, I guarantee they'd snub a team that doesn't even make their conference final with a non-conference RPI of 80 and a Strength of Schedule of well over 100
They won only one of five games vs. Top 50 opponents...

That said - we have all seen how the committee plays the game - when it suits their desires - they quote RPI, SOS, and record vs. Top 50.
But when all those things go against them they make up the argument of "the eye test" ...so I think Wichita's still in because of their fan base and the money they'll bring over some other bubble team like Tulsa, GWU, or St. Bonaventure...

                        Final score UNI 57 - Wichita 52
In the end Wichita shot poorly, UNI played outstanding defense.
Baker, despite all the accolades, was just 5-18 & Fred was 2-9, Wessel 0-4 - kinda hurt their own team jacking so many bad shots.
The Senior trio went 7-31 (and 1-13 from the arc), the rest of the team went 13-32.
The best show in college basketball will be spin that Marshall and the Wichita people spout the next week then if they DO get snubbed - the incredible meltdown and tantrum we're going to witness. NCAA will probably even go the distance to open up a 69th bid for Wichita just to avoid the horrible embarrassment Gregg is gonna trigger.

In the second semifinal match between Evansville and Indiana State, the Aces have dominated all game, and lead 46-28 early in the second half. Egidijus Mockevicius has played very sparingly due to fouls, and has only 2 points and 5 rebounds. But their other players have all stepped up and playing well. Indiana Stateonte Brown has 14 points and is playing well, but no other player has more than 4 points, and they are shooting poorly (10-38, 26%)

I have tried to do a little research- Note that Wichita State's RPI dropped to 46 after they lost to UNI today. I cannot find a single instance where an MVC ever got an at-large bid with an RPI worse than about 40.
Missouri State failed to get a bid in 2006 with an RPI of 21- which is still the record for best RPI team not to land an at-large bid since the RPI was invented 35 years ago.
It is rare for any midmajor to get an at-large bid with an RPI below 40.

So it all comes down to how many bids go to undeserving teams that upset someone and win their conference tournaments.

By the way- Evansville pulled away and lead by as much as 30 points before settling for a 68-42 win over Indiana State-

This might hurt the attendance a little tomorrow, but it will be UNI vs. Evansville for the MVC Championship-
