  • The housecleaning has begun at Illinois

will there be more under the NEW Athletic Director...?

football coach Bill Cubit, who many thought deserved a shot at staying - has been fired
..what's really odd is that while he was the interim head coach after Tim Beckman was fired....he did well enough that a few games later, on November 28, 2015...
he had his "Interim" tag removed and he was given a $2.4 million/TWO YEAR contract!!!
Now Illinois will obviously have to buy that out...

    funny how the articles read....
"In case there was still any doubt, Bill Cubit will indeed be coaching Fighting Illini football this upcoming Fall (2016).
University of Illinois trustees met in Chicago on Thursday, and official approval of Cubit's new two-year, $2.4 million contract was on the agenda.
The two sides agreed to the deal in principle back on November 28th..."

..but now he's gone......several of the Illini assistants 8 or 9 of them) who were still under former contracts - were hauling in ~$200K up to $440K.
Presumably most of those will now also have to be bought out.

along with this announcement came a confirmation that basketball coach John Groce will not be fired this year and will be back in 2016-17
Unfortunately - in an effort to win a couple games and save his job - he brought Mike Thorne back from injury when he should not have played..
then after a few minutes - he was reinjured and done for the season but had blown his possible redshirt.

Newly hired AD Josh Whitman seems to have his own choice in mind for the head football coach job.

Here is a strong rumor about the new head football coach opening- A sports anchor from WBBM-TV, the CBS station in Chicago, is reporting that "cedible sources" are saying Illinois will hire Lovie Smith as their next head football coach.

Lovie was the Chicago Bears head coach from 2004-2012, and the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2014-2015. He was just fired January 7, 2016.

I'm not an Illinois fan, but I can't figure out why they would hire a guy like Lovie Smith. To me, it would make more sense to hire an assistant coach, from a high quality program (SEC, BIG 10, BIG 12, Pac 12, ACC), with a proven track record of recruiting.

Or, I think fans wanted them to take some of those many millions they get from the Big Ten network, and all the big corporate donors and make a big time hire like Ohio State did when they went after Urban Meyer, or Michigan did with Jim Harbaugh.

I don't think the Illinois football program could hire a big name like Meyer or Harbaugh, no matter how much money they dangled in front of them. It isn't a high profile job. I do believe they could get an assistant from a top 5 conference to take the job, build it up, and then move on to a better job after turning around Illinois.
