  • InSU vs. IlSU

Indiana State has pulled out to a 20-12 lead in the first half, as Illinois State seems to be settling for jump shots, and shooting a low percentage.

So far- ILSU is 5-18 overall and 2-11 from three-

Indiana State 50 IL State 38 with 7:31 left
Still time for ILSU to rally, but they have had terrible shot selection (14-46, 30%), poor FT shooting (5-11) and carelessness with the ball (15 turnovers so far). Indiana State has not been a lot better with their shooting, but only 8 turnovers and better foul shooting have kept them with a comfortable lead.

Deonte Hawkins is 1-9, and 0-5 from three, but he just keeps jacking up 25 footers. Unbelievable.

Hawkins is now 1-10, but his last several shots have been more threes, which he is now 0-6. This is a clinic on how not to win basketball games.

Indiana State has shot poorly, but has play good fundamental ball otherwise.

Score is now 54-39 with 3:53 left.

ILSU making a furious rally. Their press has caused several turnovers, and McIntosh has drained a couple threes. They cut the lead to 58-52 with just under 2 minutes left.

the three guys in stripes are even more clueless....
that last sequence of calls was comical...Wills bangs heads with Smith & they apparently call a technical on Khristian Smith and send him to the bench with 5 fouls so he can't shoot his own FTs, then allow Lee to shoot for Wills????
Kinda trying to help out the 'Birds...

.. Muller simply did not have them prepared - what the heck were they doing 3/4 of the game...
why were they trying to slow the game down?...they are a more athletic team, able to fast break or beat them to the rim and yet they tried to eat up clock, slow it down, and just set back and launch long ones
They scored 39 pts in the first 36+ minutes, then using their speed & athleticism have added 18 more pts in the final 3+ minutes

Illinois State has been outscored in the paint 28-12
Muller brought the wrong game plan and the players took the Sycs too lightly

ISU finishes 17-14, their RPI will finalize at around 120 and their record vs. Top 50 teams 1-6 & 3-9 vs. Top 100's.

They needed to win and maybe get to the final game to enhance their resume for an NIT bid.
Their RPI dropped to 121 as of right now. They are a long shot now for an NIT bid. In fact, I don't know if any team has ever gotten an NIT bid with an RPI that low, except the autobids that go to conference winners.

It really is remarkable. IMO they have the 2nd most talent in the league behind only WSU. But they play so undisciplined, play so individually on offense, and take such horrible long shots early in the shot clock that they don't play like the second most talented team in the league. Mueller needs to take a long look in the mirror and see if he can figure out a way to get his players to engage and follow the game plan at all times, play hard at all times.

Also worth remarking: The winning teams today all scored 66 points, except Indiana State who scored....... 65!
                    Gotta stop feeding the trolls.

BTW- Here's evidence that I am not the only person who thinks that the foul calls look suspiciously different on the opposite ends of the floor sometimes...

"Brian Wardle spends first 30 seconds of media timeout
trying to convince Mark Whitehead that fouls are being called differently
                      at each end."

                        .

Pollard is one of the worst refs around, but they did get that call 100% correct. As soon as they showed the replay at the arena, it was obvious what the outcome would be...the initial foul on the Birds, followed by the contact technical on Smith. It was a technical, so the Birds could send whoever they wanted to shoot their FT's.

Eventually - Right call, just to call a foul on Smith.... but... Smith was caught in a situation, ISU player in front of him grabs for the ball to get a tie-up or cause turnover, Smith raises the ball and arms to keep from being tied up or lose the ball and bops the guy behind him in the face. Was clearly inadvertent as Smith went right to the Redbird to help him.

Unfortunately.... This is the game that it is evolving into. Over-analyze situations like this and call a foul. But over-analyze something like when Stone of Maryland slams Wisky's Vitto Browns' head to the floor and it isn't an ejection (which it should have been).

                            insu vs ilsu

What a fiasco!! The last three minutes of this game are what is ruining college basketball. People are getting weary of refs. who become the center of the game in lieu of the players & coaches. If these refs don't have enough confidence in their calls, and have to check the replay after every close call, they should not be on the floor. Replay checks should be unusual and should not delay the game. The last 3 minutes of this game seemed like an hour....no wonder attendance is down!

A few refs gave to make it all about them and show everyone who's in charge.
