His team finished 22-10, tied for 4th place in the MVC and likely will get a "bid" to play in one of the newer "buy-in" post-season tournaments.
However Barry seems to know that they may not be able to do so and play in any such events because the costs would be prohibited under the current environment of a state budget crisis... "Hinson said the program may not participate in any postseason tournament where it has to pay
to play because of the Illinois government’s budget situation."
If that is so, then the same situation might also negate any chances ISU has of playing in the post-season.
However - a separate comment by SIU's Athletic Director says they will do everything they can to play... "We will always give our kids an opportunity to participate in the postseason when we can,"
Bell said. "We might have to host during spring break. I do believe we'd be able to meet,
or even exceed what we'd have to bid to host a game in either the CBI or CIT."

The newest post-season tournament, the Vegas 16, might be a better alternative for them. Since it is held at a single site (the Mandalay Bay events center in Las Vegas), there will be far less travel expenses for teams, especially those that keep advancing and have to play on the road. Supposedly, the cost of buying in to the Vegas 16 will be lower than the CIT or CBI, and all travel and hotel expenses are included.
The Vegas 16 is the latest edition to the roster of college basketball postseason tournaments. You have the Big Dance, which is the NCAA Tournament. You have the NIT, the CBI, the CIT, the Vegas 16...
Pantagraph says that ISU has already turned down the CBI and the CIT and is waiting for an invite to this new Vegas Tourney
"ISU coach Dan Muller ... said the Redbirds (18-14) are waiting to see if they will receive an invitation to the Vegas 16. That is the newest postseason tournament that will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on March 26-30.
The Redbirds earlier turned down invitations to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament and the College Basketball Invitational.."
There have been multiple reports that all 3 tournaments are having problems getting teams to accept bids, even the new Las Vegas 16 tournament.
The reported cost of hosting a home game in the CBI is now around $40-50K, and around $40K for the CIT. But then those teams that host can recover some costs or maybe even make a profit through ticket sales, concessions, etc. The buy-in for teams that travel is much less, but then there are some travel costs and other expenses that may not be covered, and no chance to recoup their money.
The Las Vegas 16 tournament is held at a single site (the Mandalay Bay Hotel Arena). The cost to buy in is around $50K for each team (Includes travel costs and hotel, but not meals or other expenses) . But of course, no team gets a home court advantage or a home game to garner revenues.
Apparently schools are not as thrilled with these lower level tournaments as they were when they were new. And now many schools are more concerned about the costs. We may see some pretty mediocre teams filling the brackets in these tournaments this year, and it might be hard for them to continue much longer.
Surely there's some successful ISU alum who can come up with this if they let him sit on the bench and bunk with the team while in Vegas.
And it's a gamble (Las Vegas-style) but if they can win a couple games and play 3 or 4 in the tourney, then $50,000 buy-in isn't so bad.
