  • Lobo fans suggesting names for McKay's replacement

They feel he may not be a "big name" deserving of the program's reigns.

New Mexico probably deserves better. They had a nice basketball tradition until their recent trend of hiring scumbags.

I think the Fran Fraschilla suggestion may just be facetious. But they now have a lot of upset fans after their nice start (mostly by playing cupcakes) has been followed by several embarrassing blowout losses. They lead by 21 at Air Force in the first half last night, then Air Force went on a huge run in the 2nd half and won going away.
Ritchie McKay got a long extension a couple years ago, and I think is signed through at least 2009.
It will be interesting to see what happens there. But for sure, the luster has faded from McKay. He has had only 1 postseason appearance in his nearly 5 years, and that was brief as they suffered a huge blowout in Danny Granger's senior season there.

Coach, Ritchie McKay signed a three year extension in March of 2005, that extended his contract through 2010 with a raise.

So unless they want to buy out 3 more years, they are kinda stuck with him a while.

But you are right on that one postseason appearance, it was only because the Andrew Bogut-led Utah in 2005 had a very bad game in the Mountain West Conference Finals game, that New Mexico stole the automatic bid that year, getting blown out in the first NCAA game by 'Nova.
Had they not won that game their RPI wouldn't have even been as good as the 67 it turned out to be, with a non-conference SOS of 313, and no real quality wins, so they probably would not have gotten an at-large bid.
In 2005, the lowest RPI that did get an at-large bid was #65 NC State.

Louisville AD Tom Jurich had a great quote during the press conference to announce the hiring of former Tulsa head coach Jim Kragthorpe. When asked why U of L didn't go after a "big name" coach, Jurich said something to the likeness of "If there is such a big name coach out there, why are they currently unemployed?" I thought it made good sense...
People need to recognize there is a huge difference between playing hard, and playing well...

Kragthorpe is 10 letters long. I think that qualifies as a big name!
